I remember in sixth grade finding out that my mother had melanoma; I was more frightened than I had ever been. From that time on, I knew I wanted to be a nurse.
The field of nursing demands much of a person and constantly changes. Nurses are needed worldwide, and the demand for them is on the rise. I want to be a nurse for all of those reasons. I never want to stop learning or become comfortable and settled in a career. I want a job that pushes me to my limits. I am motivated to become a nurse because I want to promote healthy living and provide care for people who need it. Nursing is a job with many open doors and opportunities, and I cannot see my future any other way. Being a nurse will be one of the most rewarding careers someone can partake in and will make me a better person. I have wanted to become a nurse since sixth grade, but I do not want to stop at a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. My goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner in Dermatology. It has been my dream since middle school. I have much determination to achieve this and succeed. When my mother was sick, I got to see how important nurses and doctors were in saving a person's life, and since then my heart has been set on doing the same thing for others. My vision is to work in a dermatology clinic and help people with skin disorders and cancers. I want to put smiles on people's faces, just like the nurse put a smile on mine when I was young. I am aware it will take hard work and determination, but I have never been one to give up on something.
University of Nebraska Medical Centers's mission is to improve the health of Nebraska through premier nursing education programs, inoovative research, the highest quality patient care, and service to underserved populations. I have taken beginning steps in the health care field; taking a Health Care Careers Class in high school, job shadowing my dermatologist, getting my CNA, and volunteering at Methodist Hospital. Now I am ready to continue my path into the nursing field and learn to help people in other ways. I am excited for what the future has to offer and cannot wait to make my dreams of becoming a nurse a reality. Ultimately, knowing that I am on the verge of fulfilling a dream that started in sixth grade with my mother's diagnosis thrills me, and I look forward to what lies ahead.
