Working with students with special needs and different abilities can be difficult. Throughout my career, I have been able to maintain patience and a positive attitude with each student, as some may need the instruction given aloud, at a slower pace, repetitively, or in writing.
I also help general education teachers adapt/modify their lessons/assignments to meet the needs of students with disabilities. An important aspect of my job is to ensure I build positive working relationships, and collaborate with my colleagues to ensure the best education for all students. I work hard to build a strong rapport with both my colleagues, teacher assistants, students, and the parents.
Leadership skills are important as a teacher. Being able to supervise the teacher assistants in my room shows that I am able to delegate tasks that aids in teaching them new skills. This also gives them the opportunity to develop themselves and take initiative in their work.
: As a special education teacher, I am
required to discuss student's needs and performances with general education
teachers, parents, and administrators. I also must have the skills to be able
to explain difficult concepts in simplified terms that students with learning
disabilities can understand.
I must assess students' progress and use that
information to create and adapt lessons to help each student learn and be
successful. I must be able to respond quickly to day-to-day anomalies and determine
the best solution to reaching the daily goal.
I regularly work with general education teachers, school
counselors, special service staff (physical, speech, and occupational
therapies), school psychologists, administrators, and parents to develop
Individualized Education Programs that are written to meet the individual needs
of each student. We collaborate as a team to identify student needs and create
a plan to ensure we are meeting those needs.
