Research Focus: Synthesis of substrates and substrate analogs for mechanistic studies on enzymes involved in cofactor biosynthesis.
Main responsibilities: Investigated the enzymatic mechanism of the biosynthesis of the riboflavin-derived (DMB) dimethyl benzimidazole, lower ligand of vitamin B12.
Protein overexpression and purification as well as isolation and characterization of enzymatic products.
Synthesized isotopically labeled aminoimidazole ribotide revealed the remarkably complex rearrangement involved in assembling the thiamin pyrimidine in bacteria.
Synthesized substrate, intermediate and isotopically labeled guanosine-5*-triphosphate (GTP) revealed the rearrangement reaction in which (GTP) is converted to cyclic pyranopterin monophosphate (cPMP), an intermediate in molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis.
Synthesized of possible products for the E.coli enzymes involved in uracil catabolism led to the identification of the first enzyme that uses a flavin hydroperoxide as a nucleophilic catalysis.
Synthesized isotopically labeled toxoflavin which made possible the identification of the unexpected product of the toxoflavin lyase catalyzed reaction.
Synthesized dehypoxanthine futalosine (DHFL) that was used to study the futalosine pathway for menaquinone, vitamin K, biosynthesis.

Preliminary Studies Directed Towards the Design and Synthesis of Electro-Active Fluorene and Calixarene Derivatives.
Key Accomplishments: Designed and synthesized a modified calixarene derivatives that allows, for the first time, the isolation of a stable cation radical salt that binds a single molecule of nitric oxide deep within its cavity with remarkable efficiency.
Synthesized a series of -stacked molecules consisting of a benzophenone donor, one to three fluorene bridges, and a naphthalene acceptor, to study the rate of Triplet energy transfer from benzophenone to naphthalene across the fluorene bridge using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy.
Synthesized and developed new methodology for designing -stacked polyfluorenes which may prove to be highly relevant to the electron-transport phenomenon observed in DNA through -stacked bases.
