I am new to working in retail so I am still learning the job. I know the basics and I know how to make a customer happy by either finding a solution to their problem or finding the clothes in backstock. I wanted to learn retail because I never done it so it is something new for me and I love the interaction with people especially after this pandemic and not being around people for months. I learned thatsitting at a desk and being a receptionist is not for me because I sit and stare at a screen all day and barely get to talk to people in person and over the phone. Being in the store makes me happy because I am on my feet all day helping customers and cleaning up the store. I know that I am doing the right thing by becoming a teacher because I love kids and the interaction between people. I am looking forward to making a difference in at least a few of my student's lives just like my fourth grade teacher did for me. I am so tired of some teachers not having patience with their students and not getting to know their students on a personal level before they start judging them. I have a brother with ADHD and most adults in his life start judging him as a bad person because they think he is messing around or he says "What" a lot because he is trying to process what is being said to him so people take it as him not listening when that is not the case at all. I want a student like me to come into my classroom as a student teacher or teacher aide and see how excited I am to work with my students and be like I want to be like her.
I have worked hard during college to finally get to the part that I have gotten accepted into Fresno Pacific's Multiple Subject Credential Program that I am going to start in fall.
This is a small business so there aren't a lot of employees and only two work at a time. I work here three days a week for a little bit more income. when I work I open and close, run the cash register, greet the customers, if a customer can't find something I help them look and I check our backstock, if they have questions I answer it to my best ability, and make sure the store looks like it did when we opened after every customer leaves.
I started working there the summer of 2016 before I left for college because I needed a little bit of income and I have done that every summer since. When the pandemic started, I have worked there every Tuesday and Thursday. I am in charge of answering the phone, transferring calls, greeting people at the door, type worker comp accidents, send emails and type up documents.
I assisted in a handful of fourth grade, a combo fourth/fifth class and one first grade classrooms over the years. I am lucky that Channel Islands was able to put us in classrooms as soon as my freshman year of college. I learned different techniques that different teachers used and saw how teachers overcome problems. I loved every experience and made me become stronger and more confident in myself. I helped students in small groups, one-on-one and also just walked around the classroom and asked students if they needed help. I had to do a lot volunteer for two of my math classes.
I did this my second semester senior year of high school because I had two free periods and none of the other electives sounded interesting. It was the first time that my high school allowed this because I knew I was interested in teaching elementary school. I went three days a week from 1-3. I worked with students in small groups and walked around the class to make sure students were doing what they were supposed to do. It was the first time that I was able to observe teachers in the classroom and where I noticed the difference between a teacher who cared about their students and the teachers that did not have patience for young students because I was in three different first grade classrooms.
