When I started my business, my knowledge of computers was limited to a Fortran IV programming course and a year of experience playing games with a Compaq Deskpro 386. Internet providers were just beginning to offer their services in the area and almost all connections, except for companies that could afford ISDN, were dial-up. My first contact with Internet was two months before officially opening the store. We would rent access to a computer connected to the Internet and charging by the hour. I had to learn from how to install the adequate software to be able to make a dial-up connection to solve hardware problems and network issues. It was not only my first experience dealing with customers but I also had to teach them how to surf the web, send emails, and enter a chat room. I put my efforts to learn as much as I could to be able to offer the best service. And I did it. I became so passionate that I started to research other areas related to the Internet. In a few months I was able to create web sites with animated gifts, modify Perl scripts to send emails from web pages, and design a short course to offer customers an introduction to the world of the web, ftp, telnet, protocols, and a basic understanding of networks. Unfortunately I had to move to another country and I could not continue working in the business, but my passion kept growing and I continued studying by myself and acquiring new skills. This continuous improvement in my abilities gave me the possibility to work as web designer and webmaster in different opportunities. When I had the opportunity to enroll in college, I was thrilled at the prospect of formalizing my education and learning new technologies.
In this new phase of my life I have been able to expand my understanding of many topics and discover others that increased my desire to learn. My energy has been focused on acquiring more knowledge and developing my old and new skills to turn myself into a valued professional of the IT industry. I enjoyed every class I took but the most rewarding were those related to programming, databases and web development.
