directs traffic and ensures public safety at County landfills; communicates landfill rules to landfill users and enforces rules as necessary; directs and controls commercial and residential waste vehicles at the tipping/dumping area; communicates with other Department of Waste Resources staff using two-way radio systems, hand signals, verbally, and in writing; maintains a professional demeanor and appearance to portray an authoritative position of safety and control; and performs other related duties as required. The Landfill Safety Monitor is an entry level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents are required to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks and have the ability to communicate effectively with the public in a friendly but firm manner, and maintain composure and professionalism. The primary responsibility of this classification is to control the high volume of traffic entering and using landfills to provide the maximum level of safety and traffic control to Department employees and landfill users. This classification also requires the performance of a variety of labor-intensive tasks to include general facility cleaning, appliance/white good recycling, and other work as required.
