  • Supervise and train other employed veterinary technician and any students
  • Calculate, prepare, dispense, and administer prescriptions as instructed by the veterinarians
  • Enter medical, anesthetic, prescription, laboratory tests and results, and necropsy records using Zims
  • Collect, process, and record results for in-house laboratory samples including blood, feces, urine, cytology, semen, etc.
  • Use and maintain in-house hematology equipment including abaxis analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes
  • Perform in-house avian and reptile differentials
  • Collect, package, and ship samples to external laboratories
  • Obtain and process radiographs using digital equipment
  • Performing necessary medical treatments for animals within the collection as directed by the veterinarians
  • Understand and abide by protocols for handling Class II narcotics and all other controlled substances
  • Follow and enforce all quarantine protocols
  • Administer varying forms of anesthesia to a variety of patients and monitor them throughout the procedure and recovery
  • Perform dental prophylaxes on a variety of animals
  • Prepare animals and instruments for surgery using the aseptic technique
  • Assist veterinarians with surgeries as needed
  • Euthanize animals when necessary under the direction of the veterinarians
  • Perform necropsies and collect and properly package tissues for histopathology on invertebrates, birds, reptiles, mammals, and fish
  • Manage all hospital inventory, ordering, and disposal
  • Create and maintain all health center purchase orders
  • Ensure the animal health center is maintained in a clean and orderly fashion
  • Provide basic husbandry and specialized nursing care to quarantine, collection, and hospitalized animals when necessary 
  • Assume the lead role in the observation of animals housed at the health center
  • Serve as an Animal Manager on Duty who helps coordinate situations related to animal emergencies.
  • Work closely with keepers in every area of the zoo to train, maintain, and shape any medical behaviors including voluntary blood collection, blood pressure, ultrasound, injections, various sample collections, etc.
  • Use appropriate techniques to restrain, capture, and transfer a variety of animals safely
  • Interact with visitors concerning zoo operations, education, and conservation
