In the absence of a physician, dentist, or allied paraprofessional staff, Independent Duty Medical Technician (IDMT) provides a full spectrum of patient care at the remote site or mobile medical unit to include but not limited to: routine and emergent medical care, emergent dental, medical laboratory, pharmacy, bioenvironmental services, public health, health promotions, patient administration, mental health, and medical logistics functions. Establishes work methods and standards, coordinates with other activities, agencies and organizations for the provision of health care for assigned/attached personnel. Assists with the formulation, maintenance and implementation of policies and procedures as it pertains to preventive/occupational medicine and health-care. Provides periodic counseling of patients and identifies problems and seeks appropriate resolution. Renders treatment within scope of practice and in accordance with established protocols.

I have 24 yrs of medical experience in the Air Force. In those 24 yrs I have obtained the following:
Extensive experience in Labor/Delivery, Newborn Nursery, Ante-partum/Postpartum and OB/GYN clinic. Women's health required knowledge and skill on handling OB emergencies, newborn codes, vaginal/cesarean deliveries, phlebotomy skills, able to identify when mother/infant is experiencing medical emergencies and surgical skills as in preparing O.R. for cesarean section and assisting physician with laceration repairs/wound management. OB/GYN clinic involved prepping patient for physical exam/procedures and setting room up for correct procedure(s). Obtaining urine samples to check for dehydration, sugar or protein in urine. Working in L&D consisted of monitoring and recording vital signs, fetal heart tones, and other physiological measurements on obstetrical (antepartum/intrapartum) and newborn patients. Assembles and sets up delivery rooms and routine/surgical deliveries. Perform APGAR score/assessment, suctioning, obtaining body measurements, administering erythromycin ophthalmic ointment and vitamin K, and set up and monitor phototherapy lights, IV administration, obtaining PKU labs/hemocrits and postpartum care. Administer newborn immunizations and perform newborn hearing screening. As a manager and supervisor/mentor of L&D my skill set was broadened as I have assisted professional personnel in providing preventive and inpatient care to a joint service population of 56k on the second busiest birthing unit in the Air Force with over 1200 deliveries per year. Responsibilities for antepartum/postpartum, labor and delivery, neonatal was to ensure necessary supplies were available. Manage budget of over $800k. Maintained all equipment and enlisted personnel issues to include scheduling/providing constructive feedback. Lastly helped to ensure a safe, sanitary, and secure atmosphere for patients, visitors, and staff. I have also worked other ares of the hospital that had me expound on my skill-set. As a technician in the Internal Medicine Clinic I was responsible of: Becoming efficient with the sigmoidoscopy procedure, drawing blood/IV's on the elderly, performing B-12 injections and able to treat pt for shock to include possible code-blue which required extensive CPR/defibrillator knowledge.Working with pediatrics required for me to perform this job was routine vitals, height/weight measurements, time management, phlebotomy skill, vaccination, perform breathing treatments/nebulizers, obtain peak flows, perform in/out catherization and help set-up and assist minor surgical procedures. Currently, as an independent duty medical technician (IDMT) I am responsible of taking care of all readiness issues (annual physical exams/labs/counseling) and provides routine/emergency medical care to active duty members. Processes medical security clearances, manages medical waivers, tracks mobility status and report all findings. Participates in food safety/occupational shop/local facility and life support inspections to various base assets.
