During the Fall 2014 semester I volunteered at the Gladys Porter Zoo. I would go in the morning and report to Emma Mitchell and David. I would then proceed in cleaning the cages of the following animals: parrots, owls, snakes, hamsters, rabbits, and squirrels. We would take out the animal and place them in a temporary container while we removed their feces and disinfected their cages. Upon completion of cleaning their cages, I would then help to prepare their food. We would cut vegetables and fruits and feed it to the rabbits and parrots. While the rabbits and parrots ate fresh produce we would then prep the bowls for the other animals. Hamsters were fed a combination of fresh and dry food. Squirrels were fed with dry food and snakes were fed with mice. After the animals were fed, the animal keepers would pick them up and transport them to their designated area. This process was repeated on a daily basis.
