Golden Apple Scholar, 05/2016
to Current Golden Apple Foundation – Chicago, Illinois,
United States Traditionally, I spend my Summer working with the Golden Apple Foundation. Here, I take classes to improve my teaching and surround myself with future, passionate teachers. I also have the opportunity to spend my morning working in a Chicago Public School Summer School. Last Summer, I worked with a third grade class and even taught lessons. In this setting, I worked with students in smaller groups. Due to the lack of a state budget, unfortunately, the Golden Apple Foundation had to push this experience back a Summer. I was informed of this change at the end of April.
PAWS Instructor, 01/2017
to Current Thomas Metcalf School – 107 S. University Street, Normal, IL,
61761 At Illinois State, I began working at Thomas Metcalf Elementary School on campus. Here, I began working with the PAWS Program. PAWS stands for Providing All With Success. For thirty minutes, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I taught Kindergarten and Third Grade. These were breakout sessions and I had from four to seven students. I had to come up with my own lesson plans based on skills my students needed to meet. Lesson Plans would cover either Reading or Math skills. Every Friday, I would take time to document my students' progress and adapt my lesson plans for the following week. Through this program, I was also able to test students. I tested students from Kindergarten to Fifth grade using both the PASI and PSI tests, which measure a student's reading progress.
