Internal Medicine Consultants of York is a privately owned medical practice that specializes in internal medicine. As a business office assistant, I send and transmit important documents through the office and/or to the doctors, speak with patients to direct their needs, and handle private information upheld by HIPPA laws. My job requirements include organization, communication, time management, patience, efficiency and knowledge of medical terminology. In the office setting, it is my role to meet timely deadlines and keep both the doctors and office up to date on patient records and upcoming appointments.
My primary role as a Youth Mentor is to communicate and provide guidance to elementary aged students going through difficult issues transitioning from home to school. I assisted children with daily activities including homework, assignments, and reading while creating a trusting and supportive relationship with the children in order to help them feel more comfortable about speaking out and seeking help from their guidance counselor. This position required me to maintain strict confidentiality unless otherwise needed to be reported, maintain a positive environment to promote a positive self esteem and social skills, present myself as a positive role model, and work closely under the school guidance counselor.
In this clinical setting I had the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of healthcare professionals work together to create individualized exercise and therapeutic programs for patients under the supervision of a physical therapist assistant. This outpatient setting provided a broad range of learning experiences that included: young children with sports injuries, adults injured in the course of employment, and elderly patients recovering from an injury or surgery. As a shadowing student I became more affiliated with HIPPA laws, common modalities and tools used for therapy, insurance policies, and with the documentation constructed by a therapist for each case. This experience also taught me the importance of health care literacy and communication between the patient and their healthcare providers in order to build a trusting relationship and work towards the most optimal care.
Th Panther Preschool is an early learning environment taught by early education high school students, at Central York High School, facilitated by the Early Education High School Teacher. The program consists of preschoolers between the ages of three and five years old. In this environment, I oversaw and interacted with both preschool students and student teachers, by means of planning lessons, events, and day to day activities on a timely schedule. My responsibilities were to promote both mental and social growth through a variety of educational techniques in order to keep children engaged and motivated to improve their basic skills such as colors, shapes, number and letter recognition, and self esteem.
