Internships are popular among college students, and they can give you a leg-up among your peers. You obtain real-world experience in an office working with other people while other students with only a degree only have experience in a classroom. This is especially advantageous if your internship is in the field you want to work in.
An internship also helps on a resume if the jobseeker does not have the highest GPA. Grades only tell half of the story, and in many cases, hiring manager will prefer hiring someone with a lower GPA and a relevant internship than someone with a 4.0 GPA but no real-world experience. You can certainly get a job directly out of college with no internship, but it is one more thing to help you on your search.
