A summary in a sentence strikes a middle ground between the length of a brief objective statement and the broad focus on qualifications characteristic of a summary statement. If you choose to write your summary as a sentence, it should be grammatically complete and respond directly to the requirements for the job you are seeking. Identify the most significant keywords or short phrases from the description of the job you want and use this language in your summary.
If you are not dealing with space constraints on your resume, consider drafting a longer summary statement. Even if you are trying to shorten your resume, the summary statement may be the wrong section to trim down. A summary statement appears near the top of your resume and serves as the first opportunity to increase the likelihood your materials will pass an applicant tracking system with a high score and attract and maintain the attention of a hiring manager.
