What exactly are "action skills"? They’re the things you actively do that lead to both direct and indirect outcomes. Training employers, for example, contributes to their learning new proficiencies. Composing means you create content that eventually becomes a finished product such as a report or an advertising campaign. Whichever ones you include, keep them relevant to your job and industry and directly tie your actions to positive outcomes.
When deciding what action skills to put on your resume, use dynamic verbs to describe them. We’ve organized our action verbs guide by skills categories. As you peruse the list, the important thing to remember is that you’ll need to pick verbs that paint a detailed picture of how you’ve created value for your current and previous employers. Action skills you should put on your resume should be ones that show how you have contributed to the success of a company you’ve worked for, or currently work for. Aim to include action skills that align with the skills that are needed for the job you are applying for.
Action skills could include, for example, such things as helping write new software or calm communication mastery when dealing with difficult customers. In other words, your skills and experience directly impact the bottom line, whether it’s because of your quality control abilities or because you’re a skilled communicator. When you focus on these action skills, think about how they could also be beneficial to the company where you're applying. For example, if the job calls for excellent written communication skills, you can list the writing you did for the employee handbook, including grammar checks, research and fact-checking. Once you’ve locked into the key action skills that fit the job description, then look for the rights action verbs to use. For example, action verbs for research skills can include " evaluated," "explored" or " analyzed." The idea is to make your resume come alive – with action skills and action verbs – to help the employer see your talents in a vivid light, and to see how they can be used to make a difference for the organization.
