Once everything else about your resume is perfect, it's time to take care of that ugly gap in experience. Brainstorm everything relevant that happened during that time period. Did you do any volunteer work? Did you do any freelance jobs, no matter how small? Include those details.
Next, tackle your cover letter. Since that's the place to let a potential employer know why you would be an asset to their workplace, you can use the space to explain why you are still knowledgeable and employable in the tech world despite what looks like a red flag. Once you've landed an interview, be confident and honest about the gap and show the interviewer that you're ready to tackle this job.
