Position Objective: Determine the needs and provide for the development of children 3-5 years old, will act as a role model for staff and work to create a safe environment for children. This staff member will assist the teachers in meeting the minimum requirements regarding preschool children, based on Early Head Start/Head Start, State Pre-K, Child Care and state and local requirements.

Responsibilities:

Classroom responsibilities

  • Assists the Teacher with implementing curriculum and children’s developmental issues
  • Assist teachers with carrying out lesson plans and routines
  • Participate with the classroom education team in implementing Christopher House objectives
  • Participate in the introduction of and teaching of developmental skills, including concepts of numbers, shapes, colors, textures, music, etc., thus providing growth and learning opportunities • Ensure a safe, healthy and clean environment for the children
  • Assist with classroom maintenance and orderliness
  • Share responsibility for classroom supplies and equipment
  • Assists the Teacher in ensuring that the ECDS program is in compliance with upholding the standards of care for licensing, and provide support to ensure Early Head Start/Head Start, State Pre-K and Child Care contractual mandates are met by team.
  • Maintains knowledge in the field in order to develop professional skills.

Human Resources Management

  • Serve as a positive role model to children, teaching staff, and volunteers in the classroom.

Parent-Teacher Relationships

  • Develop a strong home-school relationship with the families in order to ensure effective communication to best meet the needs of the children enrolled in the program
  • Represent the agency through positive communications and rapport with families.

Team Orientation

  • Work collaboratively with agency’s staff and volunteers to promote a strong classroom teaching team
  • Sit in on weekly meetings with teaching team when able to ensure frequent and productive communication in order to best meet the needs of the children in the program
  • Attend site staff meetings held by Site Director and Pre-k Master Teacher if requested.

Community Relationships

  • Act as an advocate for children and families to the agency, the community and the professional field
  • Provide parents with resources that will enable them to act as advocates for their own children and families

Accreditation

  • Assists Program Director, ECDS, Site Director, Pre-K Master Teacher and supervising Teacher in the ongoing process of assuring the highest quality programming by following best practices.

  • Assist with agency and stakeholder needs by performing assigned tasks, which do not fall within the above description.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in working with children and families; experience with HS or other governmentally funded child care program preferable
  • Bi-lingual skills in a variety of languages is a plus.

Education:

  • HS diploma and a minimum of six semester or nine quarter hours in courses related directly to child care and/or child development, from birth to age six.
