Some examples of hard skills include computer skills like Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Quickbooks and database management; marketing skills like search engine optimization, Google Analytics and A/B testing; management skills like budgeting, hiring and scheduling; analytical skills like research, forecasting and data engineering; and mechanical skills like being able to build and repair machines.
The list above is just the tip of the iceberg. Every position requires a unique set of hard skills. Restaurant servers, for example, must know basic math and how to operate cash registers, coffee makers and other devices. Home health aides must know how to use computer software to create spreadsheets and documents, as well as handle medical procedures like checking vital signs, taking temperatures and more.
Hard skills are valuable because they are necessary for performing a job. Once you've built up a particular hard skill, you will become a more attractive candidate in your industry, and in some cases, such skills can help you transfer to a new career path.
