Summary

It has taken me what feels like a lifetime to see that people that are helpless need to be protected. They deserve to stare up at the stranger tasked with helping them and know, without a doubt, it is someone who once needed it themselves. That same citizen has a need to see through a responder’s eyes that took the worst events that life had to offer to develop a zeal, determination, and passion to take life by the horns and bend it to their will. Helpless people need to be protected by someone who has stared complete darkness in the face and replied “I am the light.”

When you find a first responder who can build the trust of a person by having a simple conversation, you have feasted your eyes on a unicorn. If you’ve never seen any of the things I have mentioned above, look at me. Observe how the glints of hope, understanding, and empathy dance between the fires in my eyes. Then watch the person that has, and always will, turn a distressing situation on its axis with a well-timed quip that puts everyone at ease.
