Aid in a variety of day to day procedures throughout the hospital.

  • Review patient charts to accurately refill and fill prescriptions under the veterinarian's orders and recommendations.
  • Review directions, use and possible side effects of drugs prescribed or administered to patients with owners.
  • Obtain history, weights, and vital signs of patients upon entering the hospital for drop off procedures or exams.
  • Perform proper restraint of various animals for examination and/or procedures.
  • Triage patients upon entering the hospital for emergency visits, problem visits, or when scheduling to come in for an examination.
  • Answer client questions and concerns effectively as well as guide through next steps based on current state, diagnoses, current or prospective surgical procedures, previously logged recommendations by the veterinarian, or through consultation of veterinarians on staff.
  • Perform client education orientations as it relates to at home care, such as diabetic management and subcutaneous fluid administration.
  • Work with other staff members to check-in and check out clients efficiently and ensure smooth flow of hospital schedule.
  • Restock supplies throughout the hospital, and report low stock to practice manager when needed. Personally responsible for ordering of oxygen tanks.
  • Maintenance of equipment including laboratory machines, dental equipment, monitoring and anesthetic machines, which includes regular upkeep and quality control as well as consulting with companies in repairing of equipment.
  • Perform technician appointments which include: appropriate administration of vaccines, injections, phlebotomy to either submit for analyses at reference laboratory, or analyze in-house, nail trims, anal sac expressions, and ear cleanings.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the veterinarian which includes: radiographs, preparation and viewing of ear cytology, preparation of urine sediment and analyses, performance of in-house blood analyses including use of IDEXX chemistry machine, Heska CBC machine, and blood smears, administration of medications and subcutaneous or intravenous fluids,performance of cytocentesis with and without use of ultrasound.
  • Aid in the process of terminal care through reviewing with clients process and options, placement of intravenous catheters, and handling of remains.
  • Help veterinarian with wide variety of surgical procedures. Pre-operatively: aid in pre-operative exams, calculations of drugs and administration, IV catheter placement, perform induction process, sterile preparation of surgical site. Intra-operatively: monitoring of patient under general anesthesia, Post-operative monitoring/recovery, and extubation. Preparation for procedures: sterilization of equipment and supplies, surgical suite maintenance and prep.
  • Performance of dental radiography, prophylaxis, and assist veterinarian during extractions.
