  • Optimization of combustion process in internal combustion (IC) engines (diesel & natural gas) and study performance in terms of brake thermal efficiency, emissions, and combustion chemistry.
  • Design and evaluate Prechamber spark plugs (PCP) for IC engines utilizing CAE techniques and high-fidelity combustion CFD (using Converge CFD) and thermal FEA (using ANSYS) tools.
  • Lead a project through product life cycle from concept to production including validation.
  • Based on the customers' needs, create and implement strategies for projects.
  • Validate and/or predict the thermal load on combustion surfaces.
  • Perform full cycle analysis including generating the 3D models for CFD and thermal FEA analysis, meshing, simulation, post-processing, and documenting results.
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings with appropriate GD&T and tolerance stack up analysis.
  • Perform bench test analyses including creating the test plans to validate the simulation physics.
  • Research and provide engineering support to the team, train new recruits in combustion CFD, thermal FEA, CAD modeling, lab testing, and company policies and procedures.
  • Generate reports and present results to internal and external customers in a timely manner.
  • Successfully designed several PCPs and achieved up to 3% points improvement in engine brake thermal efficiency for various IC engines including high speed race engines, off-highway truck engines, marine engines, and industrial power generation engines.

  • Analyzed the effects of 3-D electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) flow over a heated flat plate using Star CCM+ to estimate the effectiveness and design of an EHD cooling apparatus.
  • Achieved a reduction in boundary layer over the flat plate, resulting in higher velocity flow and increased heat transfer across the plate.
Accomplishments
  • Redesigned the intake port for a large bore heavy duty marine engine which has been implemented in the field.
  • Improved fuel-air mixing in combustion chamber by designing gas fueling nozzles and optimizing fueling strategy for several medium and large bore, marine and industrial engines.
  • Successfully designed several PCPs and achieved up to 3% points improvement in engine brake thermal efficiency for various IC engines including high speed race engines, off-highway truck engines, marine engines, and industrial power generation engines.
  • Formulated correlations and approximations for the thermal FEA simulations to accurately represent the heat transfer between the PCP and engine cylinder head. Using these correlations, the thermal FEA simulations could predict the surface temperatures of the various parts of the PCP to within 5 degrees Celsius accuracy.

Numerically analyzed the heat transfer characteristics of a flow past a heated cylinder. Used Ansys-Fluent to analyze steady, unsteady and turbulent flow over various objects including flow over a cylinder, a NACA 0012 airfoil, a wind turbine blade, and a backward facing step. Performed an experiment for the 2-D study of jets using Particle Image Velocimetry and Particle Laser Induced Fluorescence.
  • Turbomachinery - Executed performance testing on turbines including Pelton wheel, Francis turbine and Kaplan turbine. Performed experiments to determine force developed by the impact of jets on vanes.
  • Super-sonic gas nozzle design - Performed pressure drop calculations for a supersonic gas nozzle for gaseous fuel injection by performing simplified 1D calculations using results obtained from CFD. 
  • Modeling and finite element analysis - Used Ansys to perform the structural FEA analysis of a pair of Forks for a standard Class II Fork lift carriage having a lifting capacity of 4000 Lbs. Recommended the design, dimensions and the material to be used for the fork, based on cost of manufacturing.
