  • Assess and evaluate staffing needs of the unit based on census and patient acuity; adjust staff levels accordingly throughout shift.
  • Give safe patient assignments according to acuity level and experience level of staff.
  • Manage caseload of 4-5 patients simultaneously; providing quality, compassionate, direct bedside care, IV therapy and wound care.
  • Care for a variety of patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, TBI, and seizures.
  • Care for post-op patients following a variety of orthopedic surgeries including hip, knee, traumatic fractures.
  • Receive patients from PACU, monitor post-op vitals, neurovascular checks, set up PCA, fluids, review post-op orders, orient patient to unit and review plan of care.
  • Obtain admission history including past medical history and home medication list, entering collected data into Cerner.
  • Complete daily head-to-toe assessments of patients, monitor patient condition closely, report any changes to appropriate provider and accurately document in patient medical record.
  • Monitor and document accurate intake and output.
  • Manage and assess tubes and drains such as JP, Hemovac, and Foley catheters.
  • Manage and assess IV lines, including PICC lines, Central lines, and implanted ports.
  • Manage pain effectively, implementing position changes, cold therapy, activity, timely administration of analgesics with consideration of prior function (chronic pain, assistive devices, emotional requirements).
  • Administer medications as ordered by provider, monitor responses and document appropriately.
  • Effectively and appropriately delegate patient care to ancillary staff.
  • Evaluate learning needs of patient and/or family and provide patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances
  • Create and maintain open and effective communication with the care team including MD, PA, PT/OT/ST, RT and Care Management.
