Float to many units of the hospital performing the duties and responsibilities of a bedside RN. Duties include medication administration, assessments, wound care, orthotic care, advocating for patient, care and support of family with patient, and basic ADL's. The specific duties, assessments, and type of care vary from unit to unit (i.e ED will include triage, NICU will include feeding assessments , Rehab will include orthotic and neuro assessments).
In addition to med-surge units I float to higher acuity floors such as burn, stem cell, ED, heart center, oncology, IU methodist adult care, PCU Arnett adult care.
Cared for patients that had congenital heart defects, waiting transplants, waiting heart surgery, s/p heart surgery. As a step down unit these patient were not stable enough to be on a med-surge floor and required close care and monitoring. I preformed central line sterile dressing changes, port care, chest tube care, daily labs, wound care, feeding tube care, 12-lead EKG, oxygen administration including high flow, anticoagulant therapy, and administration and monitoring of serious medications drips such as Milrinone, monitoring cardiac rhythms, and educated and preformed life saving measures for wide range of ages from neonates to adults, I cared for the patients family as well as the patients, knowledgeable in social work cases and cases where CPS were involved, and HIPAA compliant.
Provided excellent patient care that included medication education and helping patient organize, vitals assessment, assessment and education for safety in a home setting, help obtaining outside resources such as Meals on Wheels and Life alert, wound care, ADL's, education to family on patients care, Port dressing changes and insertion, flu shot administration, labs, foley insertion, collaboration of care with family MD and sometimes the ED if patient needed to be seen for emergent care and most importantly displaying kindness and respect to my patients.
