I shadowed in the operating room for the final semester of school to obtain my bachelors degree. This clinical project took place at Baystate Noble Hospital in order to complete my Nursing Capstone. My project was about preventing perioperative pressure injuries. This involved 225 hours of self-guided learning activities. Of those hours, 110 took place in the clinical setting. Meticulously studying preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative procedures, learning about the different positions patients are placed in during surgery and the multiple pressure relieving surfaces to use on the operating tables. I was able to stand in on numerous surgeries and procedures as well, coming up with an educational pamphlet to reinforce the importance of using the preventative measures for pressure injuries. This project resulted in a successful teaching session with the nursing staff at Baystate Noble OR, as well as a poster presentation with the nursing students and faculty of Westfield State University.
