The Ambulatory Care Unit was a fast-paced surgical care unit with high patient interaction, so I as a volunteer in this unit was self-directed, able to work independently, and possess strong communication skills. Most importantly, I expected to respect the confidentiality of patients. A Doctor shadowing opportunity to observe surgeries was offered to me as a consistent and reliable volunteer. In the training process, I attended a large group orientation, where I received general information about the center. I also attend a small group orientation, where they received surgical training and information specific to the center and a brief tour of the unit. As a volunteer, I received training from the nursing staff, and further guidance from a volunteer mentor during orientations. The dress code for this unit is a Volunteer Services t-shirt or polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes. I had a professional appearance which includes wearing the volunteer badge at all times.
