Managing clients at Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Healthcare, formerly known as Chesapeake Community Service Board in the OP Psychiatric Services clinic. Assist physicians with day to day clinics for scheduled clients, all age ranges with Serious Mental Health disorders, and Co-Occurring Disorders. Administer long acting psychotropic injectable medications as prescribed. Perform Nursing Assessments for each client seen, and complete all physician orders. Work collaboratively with other departments for case discussion as needed. Attend weekly Psychiatric Services staff meetings. Presented medication education to the Chesapeake Police CIT program for 2 years. Presented various In-House Educational Trainings for all CIBH staff, working closely with Medical Director at that time, Dr. Robert Pitsenbarger.
Recruited to function as Nursing Supervisor/Medical Director for Chesapeake Juvenile Services (CJS), formerly known as Tidewater Detention Home (TDH). Beginning the job, CJS had been audited by the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DOJJ) and many deficiencies were found with their medical department, and CJS close to being closed because of it. Learned all DOJJ standards related to medical care in a juvenile detention center. Became a Certified Correctional Healthcare Nurse. Became certified as an Instructor for Medication Aide Certification by the Virginia Board of Nursing so that CJS could ensure we maintained Certified Medication Aides. Medication Aides administer medications when there is no nurse available. Developed medical department policies which did not exist. Upgraded the medical clinic with necessary double locked Medication Cart to ensure medications were safe, and controlled medications were properly counted at each shift. Brought in Lab Corp so that the nurses could draw ordered blood work and obtain urine specimens as ordered by the medical doctor. Helped to recruit a medical doctor who would make visits to the detention center twice a week. Ensured resident sick call occurred twice a day for nurses to evaluate residents' requests for medical care, and that they received follow up care by the medical doctor when needed. Worked closely with leadership staff at CJS to ensure clients were transported to appointments with a psychiatrist for psychotropic medication management since we did not have an in house psychiatrist coming to CJS. Supervised all the nurses, and fired and hired nurses as needed. Supervised all Medication Aides. Ensured ability to obtain new prescriptions for clients, no in house pharmacy. On call around the clock for emergencies or questions related to medical needs of clients. Assisted with completing nursing admission physical assessments on all residents. Administered TB skin tests to new residents during admission physical, and ensured follow up with the local Health Department if tested positive. Ensured follow up for residents at local Health Department to obtain STD testing and Family planning when requested, and that necessary treatment was obtained. Nurses received training regarding all new policies implemented. Functioned as the Infection Control nurse for the facility and effectively contained a MRSA outbreak, and was in charge of annual TB skin tests and follow up for all employees at CJS. It took 5 years to get CJS medical department to the point where the VA DOJJ found our medical department to be functioning as excellent and compliant with all DOJJ standards regarding the medical department.
Program Coordinator working under supervision of the Director of Nursing for all units/programs at VBPC. Ensured the programming for each unit/program was flowing well, and addressed any need for revisions to the processes in place or a need for additional equipment or supplies. Attended team meetings for all programs as often as possible. Supervised assigned caseload of employees and completed annual performance evaluations. QA of all Seclusion and Restraints was of this job, and tasked with coming up with ways to decrease the frequency of the use of Seclusion and Restraints. Covered nursing shortages related to inability to fill a shift. Worked closely with the Medical Directors, the Nurse Manager and the DON for VBPC in this position.
Functioned as Nurse Manager for the Intensive Adult Program and the Child & Adolescent Program. Completed weekly floor work to stay up to date on latest clinical practices and procedures. Received and researched complaints from families, patients and clinical staff in order to resolve concerns to full satisfaction. Helped floor nurses make care decision by applying exceptional clinical judgment and knowledge of facility practices. Kept close eye on department operations to maintain effective coverage of all needs. Supervised nurses and Mental Health Workers for both of these programs and completed annual performance evaluations.
