Responsibilities include completing initial physical and psychiatric assessment on all patients, accurately documenting assessment using CPRS, review current lab work, EKG and chest x-ray, and report any findings that may affect the patient's ability to safely undergo a procedure. Assess patient's learning abilities and post-operative needs prior to procedure to ensure a safe outcome post-operatively. Start peripheral intravenous lines and collect ordered lab work; complete EKGs and other pre-operative orders; administer medications. Act as a patient advocate by assisting in the completion of advance directives prior to procedure, being a liaison between patient and surgical team, and educating patients and their families about the peri-operative activities. Assess patient immediately upon discharge to ensure patient is safe and stable for discharge to home, meets Short Stay Unit criteria and review discharge instructions with patient and family so that patient is aware of normal expectations at home related to their procedure and when to notify physician or seek immediate medical attention. Complete follow-up phone calls of all patients 1-2 days after procedure to discuss any concerns patients may have and to provide clinical advice as necessary. Safety is maintained by completing EOC rounds in all outpatient areas, educating staff of EOC standards and violations noted, as well as how to address violations, educating staff and patients of important related topics especially pertaining to the Joint Commission Safety Goals.
