I joined the organization as a developer in 2001 and my initial focus centered around Enrollment (creating flexibility for group's electronic enrollment files) and Billing. This opportunity allowed me to build relationships with our internal customers and learn our business in terms of my area of concentration. My biggest takeaway in joining the organization was the focus on the customer. That's a term that I'd heard at each of my previous employers, but I quickly noticed that the bar is set much higher at Delta Dental of Wisconsin. During my time as a developer, I took part of on two large conversions- IL and AZ. My participation in this process provided me insight into how the different areas of the business worked together, impacted each other, and the touch points involved.
A newly created position of Systems Analyst was posted in our department and it interested me because it focused on being an intermediary between the business and the technical team. I moved into this role with my focus changing to Sales, Underwriting, Billing and Websites. This new position allowed me to round out my knowledge of the business further, and create additional relationships to our internal customers. I worked in collaborative method with my team and the customer to further understand our internal and external needs.
The next opportunity in our department came when there was a need for a newly created role of Quality Assurance Manager. During my time on this team we changed how we worked within the project life cycle, and began inserting quality earlier in our process. It was an exciting time for the team to improve the process for our department and ultimately our customer. This was my first experience directly managing employees, which brought a new area of learning.
My current position as the Director, Information Technology Applications and Governance affords me additional visibility to the strategy both as an organization, and a department. My team is responsible for delivering new functionality to our customers in terms of analysis, development, and quality assurance. In this role, I've had the opportunity to mentor new leaders, and learn along with them. This role has exposed me to budgeting, external audit needs, and setting stakeholder expectations through effective communication. My team has gone through restructures to realign with our organization needs, as well as process changes to become more efficient. We've moved through these changes collaboratively, keeping communication channels open, and approaching change with a test and learn mentality.
I was a member of a ten person team whose work focused on interfaces for the financial area of the business, and logistics which included supply chain planning as well as our various distribution centers.
I had the opportunity with this role to attend company strategic planning sessions, and work with both our internal customers as well as our external customers.
