  • Significant Volunteer Experience: I am currently volunteering on the re-election campaign of Chicago Alderman Michele Smith. I have volunteered since the beginning of January. I volunteer three days a week, two after school and one on the weekend. At the beginning, I called perspective voters and asked whether or not we had their vote. Later, I worked to persuade undecided voters to vote for the Alderman both over the phone and in person. I also put together letters that the Alderman sent to constituents and went around the entirety of the ward knocking on constituent's doors identifying supporters. Lastly, I collected constituent requests and filled out the paperwork to service the person. During the election push I started working more often, especially leading up to the election where I worked three consecutive days along with my normal schedule. On Election Day, I served as a poll watcher for the campaign at two of the precincts. Unfortunately we were forced into a runoff, so I will be working with the Alderman and her team until April, which is awesome! Looking back, I learned a lot about politics on the municipal level and have met friends and colleagues that will be resources down the road.
  • Significant Extracurricular Activities: My junior year in high school I joined my school's ecology club. Our goal was to make the school, and the community around it, more sustainable and Eco-friendly. We organized a beach cleanup where we collected over 40 pounds of trash, and went to a local Illinois forested area to cut down the invasive species European Buckthorn. Now in my second year, we have moved onto bigger and better things, and as President I have been making sure that our group will make a lasting impact on our school. We implemented a school-wide recycling program, where we distributed make shift recycle bins to every classroom and we collect the recycling once every week. We have also developed a native Illinois plant based garden in our school's common area. We continue to go out to local woods, to help them cut down the invasive species and revert the wooded area back into a prairie. I can proudly say that we have become regular volunteers and the workers at the woods know us by name. My involvement in Ecology club has directed my love of community service and aspirations to better the planet. Between my sophomore and junior years in high school, I was fortunate enough to be able to study abroad in Spain with a Spanish exchange program through my school. We travelled to Madrid on a long flight, and met our host families. Over the first few days my assimilation to Spanish culture was not as easy as I would have hoped. Simple things like the ease of using an American toilet and having street signs and the words on the back of cereal boxes in English turned out to be things that I took for granted. Despite my obvious Americana, I did learn loads about Spanish culture. I travelled to downtown Madrid, Toledo, and the royal city, seeing aqueducts, castles, churches, masques, temples, and beautiful art, a lot of beautiful art. In Spain I felt that I was very culturally inept, and my experience during my exchange taught me to appreciate things that I have and to learn to love the world so I can take in as much as possible. Ever since I felt that I have held true to those things that I've learned and I am a better person for that.
  • Significant Educational Achievements and Awards: In my school we don't have Honor Roll or Dean's lists or any other formally recognizable student awards. I can say with great pride that my award in academics comes from my hunt for bettering myself. During my hunt I have achieved a great GPA and am top of my class. I have taken courses that are challenging to me because I want to be challenged, not because taking those classes would look good on a resume or an application. I have received no physical trophy for my academic pursuits but have gained knowledge and a passion for learning.
  • Other Significant Achievements and Awards: I like to think my involvement in gymnastics is an award in itself. During my career I had to work to progress my skills to stay competitive on the statewide level. Each night I would practice for three hours and I would like to think that I got stronger both mentally and physically every night. Gymnastics forced me into a strict schedule so that I can get my homework done for school and still be able to get to practice at six o'clock. After a sudden growth spurt of six inches, everything in gymnastics became difficult, the minute turned massive and the easy things were no longer easy anymore. Despite my new found height, I finished the gymnastics season as one of the top competitors in the state, but I found that I had both literally and metaphorically out grown gymnastics. The lessons that gymnastics taught me still ride with me today, besides from keeping my toes pointed; I also learned the attributes of determination and scheduling my time. The real awards: the trophies and metals, hang on my wall today, but, what I wear around my heart and mind every day is the lessons that gymnastics has taught me.
