As I am just graduating in May of 2015, my experience resides in my internships through the university of Maine Contemporary art Museum and a smaller local restaurant, Verve. At the museum I have organized artifacts in the permanent art collection, updated the archives, taken guests for tours around the museum, taught art classes on special occasions. I have also worked closely with the museum's registrar. He taught me how to file away information on artists profiles, as well as framing and art handling. I Have recently been working at The HInkley Yachts production yard in Trenton, ME for the past seven months and have done the following tasks; Varnishing (interior and exterior), cleaning and gel coating. My main focus while working at Hinkley is varnishing and working in the clean room. I have learned the importance of the quality of each quote and the preparation work that comes before that, Every single step counts!

  • During my year internship with the UMaine museum, I studied under both the head curator and the head registrar.
  • Not only did I help frame work and place it in the gallery but I was also fortunate enough to meet with the featured artists.
  • Here I was able to study curatorial techniques and learn the thought processes behind the actual assembling of each show.
  • My biggest accomplishment this far is figuring out how to juggle being an athlete, having two jobs and going to school full time, it taught me how to not only develop time management skills but to also be self reliant.
  • At Hinkley I have learned the importance of attention to detail and Time management combined
  • I have successfully repaired a variety of imperfections in the wood I am working with, whether it be cherry, teak, or maple.
  • I have also worked diligently in the sanding and varnish room so I am aware of what all of the wooden parts of the yacht look like before they are placed onto the boat so once I started doing hands-on work onboard I was able to identitfy the smaller pieces that I had seen on the production line and had a better sense of how the boats were put together.

Here I was able to learn the art of Varnishing. I worked in the clean room which is the last stage of production before the boat is handed over to the Owner for final sale. A few things I was able to gain experience with here were the importance of attention to detail whether that be interior and exterior cleaning ( gel coating, knowledge of different cleaning products) and varnishing in terms of build-up coats and final coats as well. I was able to work with people that had been working in this trade for over 30 years so I learned a lot about what the owners expect and how to treat each part of the boat i.e depending on the temperature and how fast certain types of varnish dries.
