Select Project Experience
  • I-195 Corridor Bridges & Superstructure Replacement of I-95 Blackstone St. Bridge No. 539, This project involves the full replacement of a curved girder bridge on-ramp to I-195 WB; replacement of the I-95 NB and SB superstructure for Bridge No. 539; and the rehabilitation of three bridges that span across I-195 EB and WB. One of the biggest challenges during the design process was to replace the curved girder bridge while accommodating the City's plans for future design of an off-ramp on I-195 WB as part of their Waterfront Drive interchange project. This would not only require lengthening of the bridge span but also relocation of the north abutment. As a result of Miss Capaldi's efforts, the design plans were revised to lower the north abutment footing while maintaining vertical clearance on I-195 WB. This resulted in an additional horizontal width of 24 feet to accommodate the City's plans for future design of an off-ramp while maintaining the project schedule and budget.
  • Smith Street - This project included resurfacing of the existing roadway and replacement of the existing sidewalk. A major challenge that took place during construction was the extension of the project limits to include improvements to an additional 0.3 miles of Smith Street. Working closely with the contractor, negotiations were conducted to price new work items and increased quantities of existing work items while avoiding scheduling delays to the maximum extent feasible. This also included new street trees requested by City officials, which required additional effort to prevent access conflicts in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. With close coordination and effective negotiations, delays were circumvented, and the project was completed 26 days ahead of its original schedule and under budget.
  • Improvements to Dexter Street & Repairs to Bridge No. 935, Central Falls-Pawtucket, Rhode Island. - This project included resurfacing, replacement of sidewalk, drainage improvements and bridge repairs. A major challenge was to improve the existing condition of the pavement and bridge while accommodating the City's (delayed) request for a roundabout within the project limits. This decision not only required additional study of the identified intersection but also resulted in a project delay of two years. Miss Capaldi divided the project into two contracts so as to proceed with construction of 75% of the project area, while coordinating with the consultant to study the feasibility of a roundabout as part of a second contract. Another major challenge took place during project construction where the existing bridge, consisting of a membrane directly on top of precast concrete box beams, required the installation of a new waterproofing membrane. In order improve the quality of the membrane application and reduce impacts to traffic, Miss Capaldi worked closely with the construction team to develop a value engineering proposal for full closure of the bridge. As a result, quality was improved the bridge was reopened to traffic within five days.
  • Route 37 is a 4-lane divided highway with 24 bridges and four major interchanges. It serves as a major east-west connector to I-95, I-295, Route 2, and Pontiac Avenue. Improving the condition of the existing pavement structure was a major component of this project. It required both full and partial closures of the interchange ramps which would impact approximately 35,000 vehicles throughout the corridor each day. Extra coordination and planning of the work, as it relates to maintaining traffic flow, was a significant factor in the timely completion of the project. As a result, this project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule with minimal impacts to traffic.
  • Route 102 - During construction of this $6.7M reclamation project, an energy development company submitted a request to install electric conduit within the project limits. This request not only had the potential to impact on-going construction activities but could have also impacted a future roundabout project. The energy development company planned to install electric conduit within the same location as the proposed drainage structures included in the roundabout project. Miss Capaldi coordinated with the designer of the roundabout project to relocate the proposed drainage structures, thereby avoiding conflicts with proposed electric conduit. Through extensive coordination with the energy development company, their request was reviewed and approved in a timely manner, thereby avoiding delays to the on-going reclamation of Route 102 Contract 3. This also enabled the roundabout project to identify, respond to, and avoid a major risk prior to construction.
