The Siouxland Community Health Center is a nonprofit organization that serves a culturally diverse population ranging from prenatal care to elderly patients in the tri-state area and surrounding communities focusing on medical, prenatal, dental, behavioral, and HIV care. During this rotation we focused on a wide range of patients from age newborn to geriatrics with multiple backgrounds/cultures. Managing these patients with acute and chronic health care issues while providing patient education, and prevention to 10-15 patients on a daily basis with little guidance from preceptor by the end of the semester. Common patient diagnosis or history of would include managing diabetic and hypertensive patients while providing education regarding disease process. Procedures mastered would be the papanicolaou test.
Ear, Nose, & Throat Consultants - Preceptor - Jessica Bowman, ARNP
ENT focused on conditions of the ears, nose, and throat including sinus problems and allergies. Patient population consisted of all ages including infants to the geriatric population. Services included procedures in office and scheduling surgery when needed for common ENT problems. Assisted in cerumen removal, suturing, removing sutures, and common problems like postnasal drip and reflux problems in 15-20 patients per day.
Unity Point St. Luke's Emergency Department - Preceptor - John Timmons, ARNP & Unity Point St. Luke's Hospitalist Program- Preceptor - Erin Mothershead, ARNP
Unity Point St. Luke is a full-service, non-profit hospital serving a culturally diverse population in Sioux City, Iowa and outlying communities with in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota for inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and urgent care for acute and chronic health care problems. Gained great experiences with imaging and diagnosing abdominal pain, and chest pain complaints. Mastered diagnosing and treating COVID, pneumonia, strep throat, ear infections, fractures, and suturing patients along with when to use or not use antibiotics. Comfortable providing recommendations for consults when appropriate. Emergency room patients seen per shift has ranged from 8 - 12 per shift, and patients admitted to the hospitalist range from 4 - 8 patients per shift.
