No matter which format you choose for your resume, pay special attention to the professional summary and skills sections. SQL development is a competitive job market, which means you need to make yourself stand out as much as possible. Provide a strong professional summary that includes your biggest achievement in the industry and ensure you list your most relevant technical skills at the top of your skills section. Strong action words, quantifiable information, and well-organized information will further improve your chances.

Ideally, you want your work history to speak for itself. But the reality is everyone starts at a novice level. Likewise, not every talented SQL developer will have become proficient strictly through their work history. The skills-based resume format is designed to focus the hiring manager’s attention squarely on your skills and how they are relevant to the opening, not the path you took to accumulate those skills.
After about two or three years as an SQL developer, your career will start showing a progression. It will include increasing responsibilities, a greater set of technical and management skills, and several unique accomplishments. Use a chronological resume to illustrate the path your career has taken, and how you have matured as an SQL developer.
A chronological resume is also preferable if you are applying for a role in a conservative company or industry, such as government, defense, banking, or energy. Check out LiveCareer's selection of resume formats for additional guidance.
