Experience
Telecommunications Technician Supervisor
April 1999 to March 2014
iTeco Nigeria Limited - Port-Harcourt, Rivers, Nigeria
  • With over 41 years of combined experience and training at seven different organizations in the telecommunications field, I have worked in all areas of corrective and preventive maintenance (less rigging job) operations, faults monitoring, timely resolutions, quality customer services, monthly availability report always close to specification as per service level agreement of 98%.
  • Tools used in the performance of my duties are but not limited to Tools Kit, Tone Generator, BERT, Network Analyzers, Signal Generators, Spectrum Analyzers, Oscilloscopes, Avo meter, Fluke Telephone line tester, Laptop, Telephone box, D.C power supply, Line Tester, etc.
  • Professional Experience For 14 years in my last work place as supervisor in the existing Wide Area Network (WAN) I had two arms of duties namely: 1.
  • Faults and 2.
  • Job Orders.
  • Under faults, I give priorities to faults that affect more than one or more users and assign staff to deal with the problem after a brief review of possible cause of outage acting to conform with the service level agreement (SLA) for the particular outage.
  • The SLA varies in accordance with a number of factors including location of faults.
  • Distribute other fault dockets to other staff members and be available in the central office to assist remote workers in the resolution of the problems.
  • The Job orders are assigned to installation staff.
  • Most of our Job orders are requests approved by the Network Manager to extend voice and/or data services to particular locations.
  • This involved change in the original network diagrams and documentation.
  • The additional installation changes including labels and routing equipment/cables has to be reflected in the documentation before commissioning of the work is performed.
  • I represent my unit (Faults and Job Orders) in the stand-up meetings held first thing every morning (Monday to Friday) by all the units in the IMT department and this gives the entire management the current status of the entire WAN for the day.
  • This meeting lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
  • My work involved the maintenance of voice and data network in the WAN by making sure the network devices - hubs, routers, switches, multiplexers, modems and microwave radio links/systems are working optimally and within specifications.
  • Preventive maintenance is a major routine job we do every morning.
  • This involves recording of desired operational equipment readings every morning and each day I check the record of disparity in the meter readings.
  • We follow industry standards to troubleshoot and isolate/ resolve faults.
  • My Manager organized a grand send forth party for me and commended my meritorious service.
  • It is important to note that I obtained tremendous co-operation from majority of my colleagues and subordinates and my mind tells me that team work is the key in anything we are doing.
  • I wouldn't have really excelled if I was alone and working alone.
Postal Clerk (Letter Sorter on vacation Job)
July 1971 to October 1971
P.&T Nigeria Ltd (now (NIPOST) - Enugu, Enugu, Nigeria
  • Still healthy and strong, I now want to keep busy with a lighter job and I like postal clerk job which involve sorting of letters in the post office and other associated administrative jobs.
  • In 1971, I had an opportunity to do vacation job in the post office in Enugu, Nigeria was I was sorting outgoing and incoming letters.
  • I enjoyed the duty for the 3 months period the vacation job lasted.
  • From what I can see, mail sorters receive and cull mail from conveyors, and sort it according to various Zip codes.
  • They also load bags for mail carriers and transport them to their trucks.
  • Between mails sorting duties you may also assist customers with packages and stamp purchases and distribute mail to customers' post office boxes inside the building.
  • Rewrapping ripped or broken packages and canceling postal stamps by hand are responsibilities of mail sorters.
  • A mail sorter checks and verifies the accuracy of addresses on letters and packages and make corrections as needed.
  • You also clean and repair mail processing equipment needed, and straighten area before your shift ends.
  • If you are highly experienced you may train new mail sorters on procedures and policies of the post office.
  • Most mail sorters work in warehouse environment or the back rooms of post offices.
  • Most work 40-hour week but overtime, such as April 15 when everyone is rushing to get taxes postmarked on time, may be required.
  • Work can be either monotonous or hectic, especially during the holiday season when volume of mail is greatest.
  • You also spend most days on your feet or bending over sorting mail, so expect to have a few aches and pains on this job.
