USDA Forest Service Sulphur R.D. 9 Ten MileGranby, COSTATEWIDE OHV Trail Crew Supervisor Detail10/2015 to 01/2016
  • Salary: $46163, 40 hours/week Supervisor: Miles Miller (970) 887-4126 I am presently doing a detail as the statewide trail crew foreman as a GS7/6.
  • In this detail my duties consist of contacting host venues to discuss housing options as well as work priorities for the venue.
  • I and two other crew members would travel to host venues on a Wednesday to Wednesday schedule working ten hour days.
  • I was able to get out on the last venue of the year with the crew.
  • We traveled to Grand Junction to work in the North Fruita Desert.
  • Myself and the crews main focus was on a section of the edge trail called the waterfall.
  • This section was a heavily eroded section of the trail.
  • We moved several rocks to stabilize the trail and built several drainages to prevent further erosion.
  • Later in the week we worked with the local jeep club (Grand Mesa Jeep Club) building .25 miles of new trail to connect the Tabeguache trail together.
  • We also performed some trail reconstruction and corridor clearing on the Sarlak trail.
  • For the remainder of the season I will be on the Sulphur Ranger District.
  • I will be performing maintenance on all of the crew equipment, including oil changes, air filter cleaning, tire changing and other routine maintenance on our motorcycles.
  • I will also clean and maintain chainsaws and hand tools as well as cleaning and maintaining the crew's truck and trailer.
  • I have been using GPS to map and flag a new 7 mile single track motorized route to connect two motorized trail systems in preparation for the N.E.P.A process for eventual implementation in 2017.
  • I was also assigned an information project that will entail going to the Sulphur Ranger District website and create link that will have maps and information pertaining to the Stillwater Pass OHV trail system.
  • For travel management purposes I am in charge of converting the Grand Lake Trail System from summer to winter use in late fall after hunting season.
  • This consists of opening and closing a complex series of gates, and buck-n- rail fence systems, that allow for appropriate uses of the various areas throughout the trail system at the appropriate times of the year.
  • In addition I have also been assisting in submitting closeout grants for fiscal year 2014 and submitting new grants for fiscal year 2017 to Colorado Parks and Wildlife for the statewide OHV crew and the Grand Lake Trail Crew.
  • At the end of the year I would compile all the work performed for the season and create and end of the year report as well as a power point that would be presented to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife trails committee.
USDA Forest Service Sulphur R.D. 9 Ten MileGranby, COGrand Lake Trail Crew Supervisor05/2002 to Current
  • Salary: $42,304.00, 40 hours/week Supervisor: Miles Miller (970) 887-4126 Since 2002 I have been the Grand Lake trail crew foreman in the Stillwater pass motorized trail system on the Sulphur ranger district on the Arapaho National Forest.
  • I am in charge of supervising three seasonal employees.
  • My duties consist of several components.
  • I manage the Grand Lake trail system consisting of several hundred miles of motorized trails.
  • Myself and my crew perform numerous tasks that include trail clearing, trail maintenance, trail construction, trail reconstruction, travel management and resource protection constructed several miles of buck and rail fencing), sign conversion, opening and closing seasonal gates and law enforcement by conducting weekend patrols including hunter patrol with emphasis on education and enforcement.

  • I have built numerous bridges, turnpikes and boardwalks on several different motorized trails throughout the district.
  • Every year we start by opening the trail system by clearing the trails with motorcycles equipped with chainsaws and Pulaski's.
  • I am in charge of work planning and organization responsibilities on a weekly basis, reviewing work schedules, planning and purchasing of supplies and equipment and preparing daily trail accomplishment reports as well as an end of the year report including a power point that is presented to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife trail committee on a yearly basis that consists of the crew's season accomplishments.
  • Also I asses and review work such as assigning work to employees, explaining work requirements, reviewing and spot checking completed work as well as employee performance evaluations.
  • I also ensure crew safety by making sure everyone is trained in certified for the equipment they are using.
  • I also create and update job hazard analysis for every type of equipment used and jobs performed.
  • I also conduct tail gate safety meetings for every project that the crew has to perform.
  • Myself and the crew also performed routine maintenance on our fleet of motorcycles, atv's (oil changing, air filer cleaning, tire changing and other basic maintenance), chainsaws, power wheel barrows, hand tools (Pulaski's.
  • shovels, mclouds, pick axes, log peelers) and the sweco trail dozer.
  • I am also the ATV instructor on our district.
  • I am also responsible for myself and the crew's time that I enter on a bi weekly basis.
  • Our forest has been dealing with the mountain pine beetle epidemic which has brought a challenge.
  • I recently attended a train the trainer class on working in mountain pine beetle hazard areas.
  • We implemented new protocol that introduced direct communication between sawyers and spotters.
  • I supervised up to 12 employees at a time ensuring these protocols were being follows and to ensure all employees safety.
  • I have also taken the lead on motorized projects for national public lands day, which is a huge volunteer day around the country.
  • I am charge of assessing the project, prep and planning, supervision of several crew members and volunteers.
  • I ensure the project is running smooth and everyone is working in a safe manner as well as enjoying their day.
  • I am certified on the sweco trail dozer, which enables me to maintain and reconstruct several miles of trail in the summer season.
  • For travel management purposes I am in charge of converting the Grand Lake Trail System from winter to summer use in late spring, and from summer to winter use in late fall after hunting season.
  • This consists of opening and closing a complex series of gates, and buck-n- rail fence systems, that allow for appropriate uses of the various areas throughout the trail system at the appropriate times of the year.
  • I have also used the N.E.P.A.
  • proccess to produce decision memos for the Broken Thumb trail and South Fork bridge project.
  • I will be doing several more decision memos in the future as well.
  • In addition I have assisted in submitting closeout grants for fiscal year 2013 and 2014, good OHV trail Crew grants for fiscal year 2016 and supplemental trailer grants to Colorado Parks and Wildlife for the statewide OHV crew and the Grand Lake Trail Crew for a total of approximately 283,000.

  • Salary: $39, 00.00, 40 hours/week Supervisor: Steve Ipswich/ Miles Miller (970) 887-4126 In the spring of 1999 I was hired as the trail crew foreman on the statewide off highway vehicle tail crew foreman in charge of supervising two employees.
  • I took on several new responsibilities in this new position.
  • My new duties and responsibilities consisted of setting up the schedule for the crew's summer.
  • I would send out requests for the crew to recreation planners at several Ranger District all over state of Colorado that might need assistance maintaining their motorized trails.
  • The districts would send back replies with their interests and needs.
  • I would then compile a schedule based on the priority of each district and their need for the crew.
  • I was also in charge of making all the purchases of equipment and maintenance and was responsible for the reconciling of all charges through pcms (purchase card management system).
  • I was also in charge of myself and the crew's safety and wellbeing.
  • I would assure this by making sure the entire crew is trained and certified on all equipment and tools that are being utilized.
  • I was also in charge of creating and updating job hazard analysis on a yearly basis and reviewing them with the crew.
  • We would also conduct tail gate safety meetings on a regular basis for all projects.
  • I was also responsible to assigning work to my employees, explain work to be done and check work progress and completion.
  • Our work week would consist of a Wednesday to Wednesday schedule working four ten hour days.
  • We would travel to the scheduled district, meeting the recreation planner at each area.
  • I would discuss what work me and the crew would perform for each specific venue with the recreation planner.
  • The work would vary at each location.
  • The crew was equipped with chainsaws and Pulaski's on their motorcycles that allowed us to perform routine trail work.
  • We would also be able to utilize ATV's if more materials and supplies were needed for a certain project.
  • The crew would cut and clear trails, build and maintain drainage structures, trail construction and reconstruction, construct and maintain bridges and turnpikes, trail hardening, travel management and resource protection by constructing buck and rail fencing depending on the projects needed at each district.
  • We would also work with several volunteer groups throughout the summer and I would be in charge of keeping them busy as well as safe, ensuring jha's are reviewed and tail gate safety sessions are completed.
  • At the end of each venue I would present to the recreation planner daily tail logs that I would copulate throughout the week of the work myself and the crew performed.
  • On the last day of the venue we would travel back to our home district I would then enter time and do travel vouchers for myself and the crew.
  • We would also perform maintenance on all of the crew equipment.
  • We would perform oil changes, air filter cleaning, tire changing and what every needed to be maintained on our motorcycles.
  • We would also clean and maintain chainsaws and hand tools as well as cleaning and maintaining our truck and trailer.
  • At the end of the year I would compile all the work performed for the season and create and end of the year report as well as a power point that would be presented to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife trails committee.
  • We would end the year by maintaining and storing all the crews' equipment having it ready to go for the following season.
USDA Forest Service Sulphur R.D. 9 Ten MileGranby, COSTATEWIDE OHV Trail Crew Member05/1996 to 05/1999
  • Salary: $39, 00.00, 40 hours/week Supervisor: Jack Pallachi I was hired in the spring of 1996 as a GS 5 forest technician on the statewide motorized trail crew.
  • The crew would travel all over the state of Colorado to 10 different districts clearing and maintaining motorized trails on motorcycles equipped with chainsaws and Pulaski's.
  • The crew would travel to the scheduled district, meeting with the recreation planner.
  • The recreation planner would then give the crew several projects for that given venue.
  • We would perform certain tasks for each specific district we would travel to.
  • If the main concentration was on trail clearing, the crew would cut and remove several hundred trees and debris from several hundreds of miles of motorized trails.
  • We would also clean and construct hundreds of drainage structures in a season as well.
  • Some districts we traveled to would have us construct turnpikes and bridges to help maintain water quality.
  • Another aspect was on trail construction and reconstruction as well.
  • We would also construct buck and rail fencing for resource protection and travel management.
  • As a crew member I would have to perform motorcycle maintenance such as oil changes, air filter cleaning, tire changing and all other minor maintenance.
  • We would also have to maintain all of our chainsaws (chain sharpening, sprocket cleaning and greasing, bar maintenance and carb adjustment).
  • We would also maintain our hand tools by sharpening and handle changes.
  • After being a crew member for two years our crew boss left.
  • I then encompassed all of the supervisor's duties which consisted of meeting with the districts recreation planner and going over the tasks for each venue.
  • I also was in charge of the daily trail logs for each venue providing accurate statistics of the work performed.
  • I also took on the responsibilities of ordering and purchasing of materials, supplies and equipment for the crew.
