  • Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, independently perform a variety of clinical assays and the associated supporting work for use in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease
  • Work closely with Pathologists to aid in the diagnosis of disease
  • Confidently work as part of a professional laboratory team in the smooth operation of a busy Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratory
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures as required
  • Act as a resource person in the everyday laboratory setting and as charge technologist on a rotating basis
  • Perform troubleshooting on all instrumentation in the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories. Instrumentation includes the Beckman Coulter LH780s series, TOP 500, TOP CTS and the Flow Cytometry FC500, Prep-Plus and Q-Prep workstations
  • Beginning to learn operation of the ROTEM - the bleeding management system
  • Train new employees and Medical Technology students
  • Prepare plasma for and perform specialized coagulation testing
  • Stain bone marrow aspirate slides for doctors' viewing
  • Prepare blood, bone marrow, tissue and body fluid specimens for Flow Cytometry testing by receiving and staining for analysis
  • Wrote operating procedure for the Hettich centrifuge
  • Currently in charge of Quality Management for the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories
  • Work with another colleague on collecting specific coagulation samples for their purchase by outside companies such as Instrumentation Laboratories

Quality Management Technologist 

  • Responsible for analyzing detailed Quality Management issues and organizing them into quarterly reports for the Hematology Manager
  • Summarize all Quality Management issues in the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories and write up quarterly Quality Management Reports for the LSS department to review
  • Keep tabs on whether a Quality Management write up was generated when corrected reports are entered into the laboratory computer system (Sunquest)

Instrumentation Laboratory and Outside Companies Assistant 

  • Collect specific coagulation specimens for the purchase and use by outside companies
  • Prepare samples for proper storage for later pick-up by outside companies
  • Send invoices to outside companies for their coagulation samples that we collected
  • Email outside companies and their contact personnel about their samples

CAP Survey Assistant 

  • Receive and distribute CAP surveys to all shifts when needed
  • Enter CAP surveys on the CAP website
  • Release CAP surveys on the CAP website after off-shifts enter them

Safety Representative 

  • Was key person for all safety concerns and questions for the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories.
  • Prepared MSDSs for the Hematology Laboratory and kept up a very organized MSDS book
  • Annually updated entire chemical inventory for the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories and provided assistance to the Chemistry laboratory as needed.
  • Ensured that the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry laboratories were compliant with all safety regulatory agencies such as OSHA and JCAHO
  • Trained all colleagues on all safety procedures both annually and as needed
  • Provided up to date information and ensured proper storage and handling of all hazardous materials in the laboratory.
  • Put together a more organized and compliant flammable cabinet for use by all shifts and all laboratories
  • Worked with another colleague on preparing pre-made labels for hazardous waste and chemicals which became an everyday necessity used by the laboratory even today

Head of Laboratory Coats  

  • Gathered soiled laboratory coats for the Hematology laboratory weekly and had them laundered by the linen department
  • Collected clean laboratory coats back from the linen department for the entire laboratory and dispersed them to all colleagues weekly.
  • Handled problems with the linen department related to missing or damaged laboratory coats
