Protection and Control Design Engineer / Substation Design Control Engineer - Transmission Southern Company Services / Georgia Power City, STATE,

Develop Protection and Control Design packages for Distribution and Transmission Substations using Georgia Power and Southern Company standards. Communicate and provide support to other employees during the implementation of the designed project. Order materials and maintain a good estimate to remain within the assigned budget.

  • Participated on the committee for the Control Design Area Assignments. Assigned areas are Coastal, East, Southeast, Metro North and South Central Region. Responsible for completing the Field Changes for Savannah and Brunswick areas.

Transmission:

  • Dean Forest 230/115/13.8KV (2013) - One of the projects related to a major relay modernization in the Savannah area. Expanded 230KV ring bus with two new breakers and the Kraft, Boulevard and Crossgate POTT fiber lines. Installed new breaker control relaying for PCB 710. Removed one of the Boulevard 115KV lines and upgrade the remaining line with POTT fiber relaying. A new DFR, SIA and fiber splice panels were installed as part of this project. Due to the size of this project, the scope changes and the complexity of the design it was imperative to maintain good communication with Project Management, Physical Design, P&C Applications and Field Services, between others. The construction for this project is set to start on Fall of 2014 and it will be done on different stages.
  • Boulevard (Atlanta) 230/115/20KV (2012) - Installed a secondary bus differential panel for the 230KV bus. This substation was the test for the new differential relay SEL-487B1.

  • Ohara 500/230/115KV (2011-2012) - Installed redundant bus differential on the 230KV buses 1 & 2 using the relays GE-B90 as a primary and a B-PRO as a secondary. Add fast breaker failure relay BPR to Jonesboro 230KV line. Also as part of the relay modernization for this station the 230KV lines for Union City and South Griffin were upgraded. On the 500KV side all the breaker control panel where upgraded. Due to the extent of the upgrade in this station two Transmission SIA panels were installed. Ohara was one of the first substations to have DGA monitors installed on the 500/230KV Bank D. During the construction of this project I spent two weeks in the field learning about the process of commissioning part of this project. While in the field I made field changes, made sure that the documentation was up to date and gave support on what was needed by the Field Service Engineers in charge of the job.
  • Boulevard (Atlanta) 230/115/20KV (2010) - Replaced 230KV line breakers to independent pole operated (IPO) breakers for the Scottdale, Norcross, Buckhead Primary, Peachtree and Virginia Avenue lines. During the commissioning of this project I stayed in the substation to oversee the construction of one of the breakers and assisted the Field Services engineer by answering questions regarding the design.

Distribution:


  • Gold Mine 115/12KV (2010) - Designed a new tapped 115/12KV substation. Utilized transformer protection scheme with relays SEL-587 and SEL-551 and design a feeder panel for two feeders with the capability of a future feeder addition. Also add a distribution SIA panel.
