Work History
11/2011 to Current
President and CEO Passionhr Colorado Springs, CO,
  • Positioned and have led organization for 19 years in educating, engaging, inspiring, articulating and advocating for policies which have totally transformed Kentucky.
  • When we started, candidates could not hope to win if they even raised policies that favor economic freedom over government redistribution while campaigning. Now, they can't win without doing so.
  • We've changed discussions in state government from "how much to spend" to "how much to save," moving Kentucky from having the fifth-worst Budget Reserve Trust Fund (Tax Foundation) just two years ago to 12th-best currently (Pew).
  • During my presidency, Kentucky has passed legislation: phasing out the individual income tax (using an approach similar to Indiana's), lowering our corporate income tax rate, creating both public and private school choice, reforming America's third-worst state pension system, passing right-to-work legislation, repealing prevailing wage requirements on public projects (saving taxpayers hundreds of millions on schools and courthouses, freeing resources to build even more), making politicians' pensions subject to Open Records, making it easier for citizens to see how their legislators voted.
  • Built what's recognized as Kentucky's most talented and effective policy and government affairs team by contracting, freeing resources for policy impact rather than sinking them into unnecessary payroll and overhead.
  • Recognized for ROI donors have received, compared to what's been spent by other organizations with larger budgets, such as teachers' unions and Soros-funded economic policy groups.
  • Raised more than $2 million for strategic policy objectives; guided institute through internal philosophical and fundraising challenges; focused on finding, cultivating and retaining major donors, using the 7-Figure Fundraising approach; have higher-than-industry-average donor-retention rate and have focused on increasing major donors' giving by 20%.
  • Formed Advisory Council with members from different sectors, which meets twice yearly, to cultivate new board members and think-tank leaders and to provide input on strategic policy objectives, strategies and tactics and help us grow our network of investors.
  • Built a true free market "think tank" by effectively fulfilling both the "think" part - strong data, accurate and in-depth analysis of policy proposals - with the "tank" part, effectively educating about along with communicating those ideas to policymakers, prospective investors and citizens.
  • Oversaw issuance of several landmark reports, including recent work comparing Kentucky's performance in key economic categories with those of benchmark states against which we "compete." We emphasized accuracy and relevancy in addressing problems in these reports but also put high premiums on specific solutions.
  • Created large media footprint. Many people are surprised to discover how "lean" our organization is.
  • Have written the Bluegrass Beacon, a weekly statewide syndicated column, for 15 years. It's carried on a consistent basis by 40 newspapers and online publications statewide. Also, have created and produced 90-second radio commentaries.
  • Consistently am a guest and guest-host on talk radio statewide. This allows me to speak to large numbers of people, get tons of earned media, find new potential partners and push our strategic policy objectives forward.
  • Work with State Policy Network leaders to develop effective strategic planning processes, resulting in our organization having greater focus and effectiveness. Every legislative leader in Frankfort knows what our policy objectives are and can tell you.
  • Developed great effectiveness and respect among lawmakers by being true to our center-right principles but maintaining a nonpartisan approach by focusing on policy rather than politics. This allows legislators who may not support all our positions to join us on some of them. Without question, we have more support overall from center-right lawmakers.
  • Successfully built coalitions with organizations centered on policy rather than partisan politics. Also, have attracted help from national organizations, including Indianapolis-based EdChoice.
09/2003 to 11/2011
Director of Policy and Communications Iheartmedia, Inc. Spokane, WA,

Developed policy and communications apparatus for successful impact, leading to many policy wins. Created Bluegrass Beacon column to educate constituents who convince their representatives to prioritize and support free-market strategic policy objectives.

03/2000 to 09/2003
News Anchor Daily News Broadcasting Company City, STATE,
  • Reporter, news anchor and guest-host.
11/1999 to 09/2003
Op-ed Page Editor/Government and Business Reporter Bowling Green Daily News City, STATE,
