My years of leadership started when I was in seventh grade and decided to run for the next years vice president of student body position, upon election I quickly learned that being a leader is no easy task. My career in leadership continued into high school where I became a member of the Sabino student council, here I learned many many valuable lessons not only in leadership but also in working together to bring a community together. I maintained my position within the Sabino student council until I graduated in 2011. I found myself as a liaison between Sabino student council and Sabino varsity cheer. Often times it would be left up to me to coordinate functions that Sabino varsity cheer could also attend to up school spirit, such as a class reunion being held at a different location we were able to send Sammy the Sabercat with a cheer escort and they were a huge hit at the reunion we also attended a charity run, Sabino student council was also attending at Reid Park further building the relationship between Sabino student council and Sabino varsity cheer considering both play a large part in getting the school community involved it proved to work in favor of both parties.
I first became a member of the cowboys organization when I was in 6th grade from there I would continue on with the cowboys for 4 years 2004 to 2008 until I aged out of the youth program. I then continued with the organization by first becoming a trainer for a year from 2008-2009 then an assistant coach for the next 6.5 years 2009-2016. My last and final year as a cowboy cheerleader 2008 proved to be one of great emotions from complete heartbreak to one of my happiest memories as a cheerleader and the reason I choose to coach cheer. Our head coach was involved in an automobile accident half way thru the season which resulted in her being hospitalized with life threatening injuries and us without a coach. It would be the actions of our assistant coach Missy McManus that would truly inspire and motivate us to finish out the season. She not only pulled the team together but made it her mission to make sure each individual girl and parent were reassured in every way possible. She remained stoic and embodied strength, by putting our needs ahead of her own. With our assistant coach leading the way and our head coach in our hearts we were able to bring home a first place national title 2008. She really demonstrated every trait a great leader should have even in the face of darkness she was able to show us light. If I learned anything that year it was that I wanted nothing more then to live up to her standards as a not only a coach but as a person as well. Ever since I do my best to implement the techniques she has taught me over the years and can only hope that one day I will be able to effect just one person the way she effected me.
Tucson All stars is a cheer team comprised of the top athletes in the city's youth community who are currently a part of one of the city's team organizations. The top athletes are picked by their coaches and must attend a tryout with the all star coaches before being picked for the team. They are expected to compete both with their original team and the all star team who attend a national competition in Florida. Along side Missy McManus who was head coach, we held tryouts to find the best of the best. Working with all stars meant having to learn and teach more difficult skills and also to combine a group of girls who haven't necessarily worked with one another and were potentially considered rivals during the regular competition season. This proved challenging in that we had to come up with ways for the team to not only bond but to trust one another in a short amount of time. My main responsibilities as an assistant coach for this team focused on the tumbling and stunting aspect as I am more advanced in these fields. I was mainly responsible for teaching and coming up with unique ways to execute these tricks. Once the team was hand selected we held a small exhibition at the city competition to not only show what we were working on but also to show how members from different organizations can come together and be supportive of one another. We ended up taking 3rd at Nationals in Florida.
I was a member of the Sabino varsity cheer team from 2008-2011 after my first year one the team I was asked to also compete in the 5 man stunt team that was comprised of the top 5 athletes on the team I participated in 5 man my last 2 years on the team as well as the normal competition team. My senior year I was asked by my coaches to be captain. My junior year on the team 2009-2010 we took home the all around state championship title and 5 man stunt group took home first place state champions in our division.
