Arrived every day at sunrise to get projects set up and regulate the temperature in the green houses, water and fertilize the plants as well as pest control. Only using products that maintained our organic standards.
Prepared the property for the project by building multiple tables for each greenhouse and installing fencing. This was work I did for two separate properties. One in Dundee and the other in Estacada. I also disassembled huge greenhouses and reassembled them on the property after making multiple trips, hauling the parts from farm to farm. Worked with pumps, air filters, fans, lighting and forklifts.
Constantly weeding, while regulating mold and pests throughout the grow as well as managing the flow of water from plant to plant. Assisted with harvest, including collecting, sorting and packing crops. Fed raw crops into semi-automated machines to separate usable and unusable parts. Checked fields regularly to spot and handle maintenance issues such as broken fencing to keep out destructive animals. The Dundee farm had two large greenhouses and nine acres of land. The Estacada farm was 30 acres of land and a huge barn for the seedlings. I became an expert on trapping mice and ended up sleeping in the barn to be sure to catch any mouse attempting to steal a seed! I love working with plants and nature and would be thrilled to continue in this field.
This was such a huge learning experience and I'm a better person because of this place and the people who trained me. That being said, I started with no experience or knowledge about making wine and ended up being the employee most requested for the trickiest projects. I got certified on the forklift as well as the scissor lift and learned how to use all the pumps, clamps, hoses, presses, filters and sorting machines.
I was trained, heavily in safety, as we use extremely harsh chemicals on a daily bases as well as extremely dangerous equiptment. Every year we hire about 20-40 inexperienced interns from all over the world to participate in the grape harvest and that could be a big risk without the proper training. So I was in charge of training and supervising every new crew each year. I had witnessed the damage that could be done when people became apathetic about the rules and regulations regarding safety so I was passionate about it.
I also trained with the lab and handled a lot of the additives and chemistry that creates a premium batch of wine. I was able to receive a work order and follow it through successfully, without assistance. I demonstrated leadership by making improvements to work processes and helping to train others. I kept my team on track by assigning and supervising their activities and giving constructive feedback
My biggest contribution was the positive attitude I held onto, raising the vibration of the entire winery.
I was lucky enough to be a part of the grand opening of the smokehouse, which was a blast!
