As General Counsel of the Real Estate Investment and Servicing (REIS) segment of Starwood Property Trust (“SPT”), I lead the REIS Legal Department, providing oversight and general counsel to each department within LNR Partners, including Loan and REO Asset Management, Legal Compliance and Loan Servicing, as well as Investment Management, the Special Situations Group and Starwood Mortgage Capital. In addition, I also provide counsel and support for other business lines within SPT, including the Lending, Property and Energy Segments. I first joined Starwood/LNR in 2005. Prior to joining the company, I practiced law with the national law firm of Gordon & Rees in its San Francisco office, working primarily with the Environmental/Toxic Tort practice group as well as the Real Estate and Business Litigation Groups, handling multiple complex litigations and taking several cases to trial. I received my J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and received a B.A. from the University of Florida.   • Primary legal officer for the Real Estate Finance and Servicing Group, the company arm that is focused on special serving distressed debt, CMBS investment activities, SMC loan origination business and balance sheet real estate acquisitions and dispositions for SSG. Create and oversee implementation of legal policies, training programs and compliance platform.
  • Work closely with asset managers in structuring and implementing workout strategies including restructuring, foreclosures and loan sales for a portfolio of over 1,500 defaulted commercial mortgage loans. Assist asset managers in analyzing and responding to borrower requests for lender consent on performing loans, including requests for transfers of interest, release of collateral and loan modifications. Provide asset managers with interpretation and application of both CMBS transaction documents as well as underlying loan documents. Supervise and manage outside counsel with respect to all aspects of the CMBS Special Servicing business, including loan workouts, real estate transactions and related litigation.
  • Oversee and manage active litigation, including lender liability claims, complex multi-property bankruptcies, breach of guaranty claims, insurance claims and claims for breach of the mortgage loan purchase agreement. Direct outside counsel in the implementation of ligation strategy, preparation of dispositive motions and witness testimony. Responsible for internal compliance with E-Discovery, including litigation holds, document retention and production, and other related discovery issues. Manage cost effectiveness of outside counsel by, among other things, creating and implementing a flat-fee arrangement and a regional outside counsel program.
  • Responsible for creating and implementing annual legal training curriculum
  • Oversee legal aspects of the corporate function, including vendor contracts, leases, licenses and maintenance of corporate entities and annual compliance with polices and procedures.
  • Served as gate keeper for all MNPI analysis, training and management of information barrier policy and protocols.
  • Active member of the Company's ESG committee.
