Anthony "Jessica" Claire, PhD, MFA, (we/us) is a Black non-binary performance artist, social scientist, and community activist who has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 20 years. They are a non-profit entrepreneur who is an expert in the decolonization of culture through the arts. Jessica's teaching interests and research specializations include Black and Indigenous psychologies, decolonial theory, and cultural studies, as well as Africana, queer, and creativity studies.
Jessica is Executive Director of Iruke Institute International, a center for arts-based research on African spiritualities. The Institute began as The Iruke Project, a multimedia production company for social justice. (Please visit Iruke.org.) The music videos for Jessica's psychedelic art pop band OLOKUN debuted at the Root Division gallery in San Francisco and the 50th anniversary convention of the Association of Black Psychologists in Oakland. The videos were also presented in a symposium at the annual conference of the American Psychological Association, and an interactive conference workshop at the International Expressive Art Therapists Association.
Jessica has performed and directed at major arts venues, including the San Francisco International Arts Festival, and has been the recipient of an Individual Artist Commission from the San Francisco Arts Commission. They have collaborated on community interventions with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the Bayview Association for Youth, and the Community Housing Partnership. Jessica currently teaches at the California Institute for Integral Studies, and is a co-founding member of the Pacific Felt Factory, a workspace for diverse Bay Area artists.
