King Otto nominally led the Kingdom as a monarch, yet the Greek monarch found himself with relatively little power, and that which he had was disputed from all sides. Greece demanded of its king a constitutional monarchy, and, when denied its wishes, the military couped and revolted, forcing the King to concede to their demands, agreeing upon a constitution which was voted into effect in 1844. Powerful Europe, always the self-appointed critics of Greece and all of her political development, approved of the constitutional monarchy as onewith the exception of Russia which condemned it as an unworthy disgrace to European conservatism. During the debates preceding the final ratification of the constitution, the “Megáli Idéa” (Greek: Great Idea) was first spoken of. The term had been coined by Greek political nationalist Koléttis who dreamed of a Greece that would retaliate against the past oppression by the Turks by seizing all of the Dardanelles regions even so far as the western half of Anatolia, a restoration of Asia minor. The Metaxas family claimed the heritage of the Byzantine royal family and joined Koléttis in the dream of Greek regional supremacy. The Metaxas family also had been very much to blame (or to credit) for the military coup of 1843 which had forced the ratification of the constitution. Greece could be returned to its former glory! Thus, a nationalist strand grew in Greece...
... Argument 1 proposes that a commoner from Stratford would generally lack the knowledge, wit, and basic writing skills required to produce such works as are credited to Shakespeare. This proposition is quite straightforward. It is apparent from records that William Shakespeare, at a young age, attended grammar school. It is believed that William had no other education besides this. The argument is based mainly on the assumption that one with such limited knowledge would be unable to write on the many themes and levels used in the stories. However, it is easy to overlook the simple fact that classical English textbooks contained much Latin and Greek. Besides this, there would have been many other European influences brought into the classroom. Thus, it is quite possible that Shakespeare did, indeed, have sufficient knowledge to write the stories.
The familiar pattern breeds a manner of contentment that is predictable and safe. Yet, this contentment may at one moment be as consoling as a mother, whilst at the very next it may be as treacherous as the worst of traitors. Thus, while familiarity is safe, it is not altogether to be trusted and must be accompanied at all times by a bodyguard of the alternative: the unknownthe search for greater things than this. If one does not look for greater things then what has he to gain? Has he not anything but that which may be lost? Indeed it would have been better that, on this day, he had looked ahead for greater things. For on this day, he fixed his gaze upon the circuitand his watch was not altogether where it should have been; and as the second hand on his wristwatch, at last, reached the final number, so also did his life. The greater thing ahead was, in an indirect manner, the veil beyond which he now travelled: the great unknown. The greater thing ahead was, in a very physical sense, the 1.24-ton vehicle which ended his consciousness: sending him forever to a place that might well grow all too familiar. The vehicle was the only red automobile on that street that he had seen that day: it broke the monotony of the familiar when, driven by the hands of his beloved, it brought the time of men crashing down around him: to what end he had yet to discover...
... Ulunya's semi-circular desk faced the door, placing her in the centre of stacks of paperwork. Surprising was the truth that a literary review company consisting of seven persons could require so much paperwork—so much copying and shredding and effort. The entirety of which seemed to fall from all sides onto the red-head who remained alone in the direct epicentre of this node of coming and going information. She'd been abandoned and the white of the pages overwhelmed her senses. As though the shocking quantity of papers which somehow made their way to her work station were not dreadful and dull enough, the sea of white, manila, and yellow was devastating to her already fragile work ethic. She lay upon her desk with her face encompassed by her hands upon a disorganized stack of pages wishing that the clock would do her an unnatural favour and skip that afternoon—and send her home to her books and her television, and her sketch pad...and her coloured pencils and pastels.
