I aim to be the Project Manager of a creative marketing team focused on producing impeccable results in a timely fashion, while refining a brand identity and growing the skills of the people underneath me.
08/2014 to 10/2015
Creative Marketing Copy Team Manager JCPenney Inc City, STATE,
  • After being put in charge of a team of 2 writers my responsibilities shifted once again. In addition to be a touch point for the legal and credit team, I also became a touch point for the Marketing Planning and Strategy team. In this role I worked closely with their team lead in developing and refining the cadence and wording of sale messages, coupons, special events and holiday offers.
  • Moving from copywriting to managing a team meant that I took a step back from writing and towards project management- and this is where I found my most success. From the moment my team received a project to the moment it released to the printer it was my sole responsibility.
  • I would begin by meeting with merchants, the credit team and the marketing strategy team at the start of each project in order to approve the thumbnails, keep them abreast of our changing format and get all the pieces of information we needed to do our job and assure that we were meeting their needs at the same time.
  • Once turned over to me I had a variety of duties including arranging internal checkpoints with art in order to assure our team met every deadline; editing my writers work to assure that all required elements were present and that everything was adhering to the most current type format; revising and polishing every page produced before leadership saw the product and after merchants requested changes; reworking and selecting editorial and headline options; making sure that the kerning, leading and other visual elements were perfect; writing all disclaimers and coupons while keeping up to date on the many internal change orders that occurred with such things; presenting projects to leadership while answering any of their questions; working with production to assure technical things like headers, page size, print codes and barcodes placement was correct.
  • One of my favorite parts of project management was the ability to improve our process and grow my writer's skills. I developed internally used checklists that standardized the process of releasing projects to the printer, as well as preparing for internal reviews.
  • I developed an on-boarding packet that was given to all new writers which contained the many server addresses and places they would find resources, calendars detailing our timing schedules, official type format documents etc.
  • On top of the 12-15 projects that I was running concurrently, I organized many classes where I taught 10+ writers how to do things like write disclaimers, place barcodes, develop coupons, and use advanced CS6 tricks.
  • I held workshops on editorial and headline writing, brought my writers with me to high level meetings in order to expose them to new areas of the company and held weekly meetings to discuss any work related or interpersonal problems and find quick solutions.
  • 6 months after being placed in charge of two brand new writers, they were the fastest, most confident and most capable writers on the team; able to do things that previously had been done by only copy managers.
