You can use the cover letter to explain how your present or former employment has helped you develop an ability to meet and greet customers; be able to multitask and act fast on your feet; provide resolution to any customer issues; and follow required health and food regulations. You also can mention how you can add value, such as your demonstrated ability to upsell wine, cocktails or appetizers; speak different languages; or accelerate table turnover when guests are waiting without making paying customers feel rushed.
The key is to focus on the specifics in the job ad and try to address as many of those needs as you can in your cover letter, whether it’s flambéing cherries jubilee tableside or pouring coffee to hundreds of caffeine-deprived customers every morning. Be sure to add any kudos you’ve received, such as being voted "Favorite Waitress" by customers or awarded the "Most Dependable" trophy by your manager.
