Omaits Well- For this well, we began two sidetracks due to the cement not setting properly. I had to test the cement with phenolphthalein and determine the amount of cement to formation percentages. Due to cold weather conditions, I replaced multiple lines of frozen and stretched polyflow, discovered problems with the mud motor not spinning properly and readjusted its position on the shaker pits, and began using two gas detectors, the Iball Instruments Bloodhound and the Weatherford TS3. Along with these adjustments, I collected and tested samples, determined and called tops of formations, recorded gas connections and drilling variables, and data surveys. This data was then logged into the Tlog software and sent to the well distribution list at report times.
Petrographic Thin Section- Identified the major and minor minerals, used modal mineralogy to identify the rock type, made general interpretations about the geological setting in which my rock was formed, made a thin section of 30 microns, and pulverized my rock. This data was collected from physical properties of minerals in a hand specimen, optical mineralogy, point counting and rock identification, and X-ray diffraction. Worked with slab and trim saws, photomicrographs, point counting, Angstrom TE250 Ring Pulverizer, and an X-ray diffractometer. Project included report writing and graphing all data.
Geochemistry Monkey Hollow Project- Monkey Hollow is a watershed that has suffered serious damage from coal mining of the Middle Kittanning coal seam. At the site, I collected a filtered and unfiltered samples. From these samples, I tested pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solid, methyl orange acidity, total acidity, sulfate content, phosphate content, nitrate content, manganese content, aluminum content, iron content, and the flow rate. With various geothermal techniques, I compared the data collected before the doser was added and how it has affected this watershed. Project included report writing and graphing conductivity, total dissolved solids, nitrate concentration, and nitrate load.
Geomorphology Projects- Studied faulting and landscape development, continental glaciation landforms, fluvial landforms, and stream processes. I calculated distances, elevations, stream gradients, longitudinal stream profiles, and stream power and drainage area. Most computer data collected from geocontext profiler or daft logic. Each project included report writing and graphing all data.
Subsurface Project- For this project, we were given four well logs and used them to delineate coal seams. We used cross-plotting techniques to study the area and see the differences in their lithological units such as coal, shale, and sandstone. To cross plot we studied the resistivity, neutron porosity, bulk density, water resistivity, conductivity, and gamma rays of each well log. Project included report writing and cross-plotting data collected.
