Supervise a unit of 7 Human Service Specialist (HSS) that are out-stationed at various hospitals throughout San Diego County, HSS conduct eligibility intakes for customers that are in need or urgent medical assistance. HSS determine eligibility for Medi-Cal and CalFresh programs.  My supervising duties include:

  • Monitor timely processing using management reports to ensure applications are processed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Conduct monthly case reviews, identify error trends and provide training and support to ensure cases are evaluated correctly.
  • Plan, organize and create new training material; responsible for training new staff.
  • Conduct monthly unit meetings, provide new updates on new policy and procedures,

As a Health Care Options Human Service Specialist, I was out-stationed at South Region Family Resource Center where I was responsible for conducting orientations for Health and Human Service customers who were applying for various programs such as CalWorks, Calfresh and Medi-Cal.  Orientations were held 5 times a day in a classroom environment for 30-40 applicants per session; customers were informed of their rights and responsibilities and how to select a managed health care plan for their Medi-Cal program.  I was also responsible for assisting walk in customers who needed assistance in enrolling or dis-enrolling from mandatory managed health care plans.  I would also assist customers from SSA who had questions in regards to Medicare managed health care for customers who were elderly or disabled.  Some other duties include:

  • Monitor and track Health Care Option applications
  • Responsible for providing monthly statistics
  • Responsible for ordering supplies such as enrollment forms and health care plan literature

As a bilingual (Eng/Spa) Human Service Specialist (HSS) I conducted intake interviews for applicants requesting assistance for the following programs:  Calworks, Calfresh and Medi-Cal.  Duties included:

  • Interview customers of diverse socioeconomic background and temperaments using a variety of standard interview and interaction techniques to determine eligibility and need for public assistance programs and services; interview customers individually and in group settings to obtain required information needed to determine eligibility.
  • Determine program eligibility in accordance with a variety of regulations.
  • Assist customers in the completion of applications and declaration of forms upon which eligibility decisions are based; elicits information in difficult and emotional situations on such matter as applicants earnings and financial obligations, parental status and living arrangements.
  • Establish and maintain case files; prepare necessary documentation to initiate, continue and modify public assistance; plan and organize caseloads to ensure that necessary work is completed in accordance with regulations relating to eligibility and timeliness, review documentation for accuracy, completeness and consistency; contact applicants and recipients regarding discrepancies and refer questionable cases to the fraud unit for further follow up.

As a Human Service Specialist for the Mission Valley Family Resource Center, I was responsible for a caseload of approximately 350 -375 grated Medi-Cal cases.  Duties included:

  • Monitor and process monthly Medi-Cal redeterminations in a timely and efficient manner
  • Determined ongoing eligibility in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain case files, prepare necessary documentation to continue and or modify level of benefits.
