I'm someone who loves the thrill of customer service. The reason I consider the restaurant industry such a thrilling career field is because it has the element of surprise. Working in the industry for multiple years, at various locations, I have recognized the skills this type of job requires. The "element of surprise" refers to the type of people you encounter while working. There are people that are going to be very satisfied with your service, some that later become regular faces, and than there is going to be those who you just can't seem to please. Working in the field, you need to be capable of handling all kinds of people, no matter there attitude towards you. Therefore, I think I have obtained a few of the following skills from having a job in the restaurant industry; Patience. The amount of times I have wanted to scream at the top of my lungs because of how someone treated me is far too many to count, however, as I've matured into a young adult, I have learned how to bite my tongue, and simply remain calm, and maintain a pleasant tone with people who are receiving service. Positivity. Staying positive or upbeat as a restaurant professional is critical to making guests feel welcome, while balancing diverse business requirements. Organization. Personally, this is still a weakness of mine, but I have made leaps and bounds simply fro having a job as a hostess. Being capable of splitting guests into sections, and balancing out number of people being served, while also keeping an eye out for the whole dining room requires very strategical thinking and organization. Lastly, Reliability. I have learned the difference between doing something, and doing you're job. I have become much more reliable to my fellow co-workers and to my employers, but as well to the guests being served. I have learned how to provide accurate information with a positive influence that better effects everyone in the situation. In high school, I was an athlete; the competitive nature is something that keeps my blood moving. Working with people is what makes my blood rush. Weather it be from behind a desk, as a hostess, or even through the phone, helping people is what I love most.
