Provided a safe environment for my student that needed extra care and attention in a school setting. As well as challenging that student to make progress and step out of their comfort zone for a short period of time daily. I worked with teachers and other one on one associates well, and made sure that the students experienced safe and productive days.
The board that I was apart of was SOAR, Students Organized Against Racism. It was a student based board that had the opportunity to hold a conference every fall and spring at Northwestern University. The conference lasted two days and each day we had students from not only our high school but other districts as well. We had planned activities and movies that we exposed the students to in order to further there thinking when it came to discussing race and how relevant that topic is. We wanted to enforce change and keep our peers educated. Of course throughout the time we spent planning and holding meetings we were educating ourselves as well. Not only were there conferences but every Tuesday we held office hours from 4-5 and encouraged students to come to talk about any current events involving racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenephobia, etc. Or they also had the option to bring up anything that may have happened to them during the day. We put pressure on teachers to involve this work in their curriculums as well as resolving issues that may have happened in other spaces. We didn't like to think of ourselves as a club because anyone could be apart of SOAR, didn't matter if you were on board if not. Everyone should be doing constant work against racism and those who came to meetings and conferences were apart of that message.
