For the past sixteen years I have been blessed in holding the position of “stay at home mom”. The hours are long and the work is never ending but the rewards far outnumber the exhausting effects of the job. Growing up in a rural area there were three things I said that I would never do; marry a farmer, be a stay at home mom and sacrifice my career in order to do so. The old saying “never say never” has held so true in my case. As you have just found out, I am a stay at home mom and you are probably concluding that the other two are true as well. You would be correct. What I failed to realize when I was younger was that what I wanted and what God had planned for my life were two totally different things. However, I have found that I love being married to a farmer and I rather enjoy digging in dirt myself; as gardening and cooking with fresh vegetables are two of my favorite hobbies. Also the career that I relinquished for the sake of raising my children was an endeavor based on my wants and not what God has in store for me.
Currently, I am finishing up this chapter in my life as I am 2 classes and an internship away from pursuing my master's in professional counseling through Liberty University. My plan is to finish my education through the graduate level to become a licensed counselor and perhaps continue to the post graduate level. I would like to start a program here in my home town and within my home church that would provide counseling and group therapy to those in my surrounding communities. My first project will be to start group counseling sessions geared toward crisis care. Our community needs a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to the problems in the surrounding areas. Crime and poverty are major stressors in our town and local officials noted the problem, publicly, last week. I believe that God can change our current course and I pray that He uses me (and my counseling skills) as His hands and feet to change the lives in my community.
