Work History
Materials Engineer, Sr.May 2015 - Current
General AtomicsHuntsville , AL

Key Responsibilities

  • Orion M&P Composites Lead which includes leading all Orion composite development, testing, and oversight of general composite tasks supporting Orion with cost, schedule, and affordability
  • Host and Co-chair the M&P Orion Composites Integrated Working Group that includes members of NASA M&P, Stress, and Structures groups along with LM's CPE's, Design/Structures/Stress affiliations
  • Manage multiple personnel charging to several shared labor accounts at multiple LM locations including Sunnyvale, Denver, and New Orleans. Insuring the correct OANs are utilized for each specific task. Leading multiple Orion composite engineers across the country
  • Establish and manage development and test schedules for Orion Composites
  • Support hardware shipment and delivery on schedule by insuring all drawings are being reviewed properly by having drawing review meetings to insure all notes and important information is being flowed down and incorporated appropriately, providing production support and dispositioning all composited realted non-conformances
  • Publish/update all composite material allowables for the Orion program along with damage tolerance testing/impact damage protection plans
  • Streamlined manufacturing processes to remove unnecessary steps and produce quality products through faster, more efficient systems
  • Coordinated and evaluated manufacturing processes for efficiency and profitability
  • Accurately wrote operational documents after receiving technical author review and approval
  • Gathered and organized material samples to use in third-party testing, evaluated results and reported on findings to optimize materials choices
  • Performed failure analysis on manufactruing defects, impact damage defetcs and material defects problems and recommended corrective actions

Key Achievements

  • Optimized manufacturing process for composite sandwich hardware for the Orion program. The current process was sensitive to certain design features that include the usage of core fill and thick bag side laminates that resulted in weakened or no core to laminate facesheet bond due to resin bleed. Optimizing the cure process by adjusting the cure parameters which streamlined and revitilazed the process making it more tolerable and insensitive to design changes
  • Develop repair process, performing sleeve/insert repair on structural test articles and flight hardware composite panels without impact on test or assembly schedules. Along with developing and calculated allowables for Stress margins and future production hardware. This repair reduced drawing escapes and defects in flight hardware. Recipient of an engineering excellence award and recognition from NASA due to this effort
  • Collaborated and partnered with the University of Nevada Las Vegas and Florida Agricultural & Manufacturing University-Florida State University Material Research Institute for material characterization/development, testing, and research efforts. Institutions currently under contract for testing composite materials for the Orion Program. Partnering with Universities fulfill NASA small business requirements
Materials EngineerDec 2011 - Jul 2015
Lockheed Martin SpaceCity , STATE

Key Responsibilities

  • Orion M&P Composites Lead which includes leading all Orion composite development, testing, and oversight of general composite tasks supporting Orion with cost, schedule, and affordability
  • Host and Co-chair M&P Orion Composites Integrated Working Group that includes members of NASA M&P, Stress, and Structures groups along with Lockheed Martin's Certified Principle Engineers, Design/Structures/Stress affiliations
  • Author, review, and approve One Company composite material and process specifications
  • Author and execute test programs for composite material physical/mechanical testing
  • Support Manufacturing and Design composites for Development and Flight hardware
  • Review and approve composite layup, trim, and assembly drawings
  • Disposition material and flight hardware non-conformance
  • Experimented with new materials and experimental hardware for manufacture of composite fiber reinforced impregnated products

Key Achievements

  • Developed and performed multi-layer film adhesive testing and implementation which lead to a composite manufacturing process of core contact/mark off test that has been optimized and currently in work to become a Lockheed Martin Space standard in fabrication of composite sandwich structures. This standard has been presented to management to determine feasibility across all lines of business throughout Lockheed Martin
  • Increase affordability for Orion Program by gaining maximum amount of information per test, team strategically placed manufacturing defects with in multi-layer film adhesive testing. Test article demonstrated sufficient strengths in defective areas bounding damage tolerance for mode II shear for all core densities
